Okay. I'm not going to finish this book, but it isn't because I don't think it's a perfectly acceptable book. It is. The writing is actually very good, and the author presents a lot of interesting questions about what it means to be "human."
This author has a compelling voice and the novel reads a lot like a Scott Westerfeld novel. Even the paperback size and cover look like an Uglies novel. However, Westerfeld draws the reader in much faster with rising action and character development.
I'm just not on board with this book. So far, I dislike the main character an awful lot. I'm 100 pages in and nothing much has happened except a lot of whining about her circumstance. I can see where the story is going (I portend much disappoint from the Zoie and Walker front) and frankly all I can think is: "meh."

I'm glad you agree. You kind of have to like the main character to care about what they're doing!

This was my exact same sentiment as well. I loved the uglies series and was hoping for something similar (obviously not exact) and this just didn't do it for me. I just couldn't get past how much I hated Lia. I didn't care what she thought or how she felt or even what would happen to her. And really what else is left to care about?
My thoughts exactly! She whined through the entire book. Her parents treated her poorly, even though they were the ones who made her that way, and her sister was just a horrible human being. I too was hoping for something similar to Uglies, but didn't find it.
I think a bit of whining is acceptable in this case. She just had her humanity stripped from her. Also, if you continue reading, there are some plot twists, character development and better scenes. I'm at the beginning of the third book and you would not believe the plot twist about the car accident.
