This book irritated and enthralled me in equal amounts. Kinda like the Siren's call I just realized.
Stories that are wrapped in a myth are some of my favorites. Stories about teenage girls I realize are not.
Having been a teenage girl and having made stupid choices at that time, you might think I could relate.

Perhaps it is the 'not my real father' trope that irritates me. Unfortunately, this novel relies on this form of alienation, along with a teenager self righteously digging into her parent past in search of some mythical 'truth'.

I have come across several novels this year that feature teenagers or young adults deciding that they have a right to know their parents' secrets and damn the consequences. Is this the result of permissive parenting with the child as the centre of the family? I don't know, but children have no right to their parents' past and children adopted and raised in loving homes do not have any parents more real than the ones who raised them. Stop this destructive myth that someone who contributed genetic material is a father or mother. And this is why only 3 stars.

Apart from that I enjoyed the tell of the fisherman and the mermaid. I enjoyed Weyward much more. This book is not that book.
