Lean, concise writing dragged me into this story. I couldn't put it down. There's nothing deep or complex here, just an engaging, fast-paced, bind-bending romp with just enough gore to tantalize. The plot is direct, the protagonist is the director of a secret government agency that uses human beings to "spy" on its enemies. Is torturing a handful of people worth saving thousands of lives from terrorists? It's an ethical question that, while the story doesn't delve too deeply into it, forces you to ask it.
I marked it as 5 stars, but honestly it's 4 1/2. The characters lack any real complexity, and the writing uses only the barest of details and descriptions. But as a reader, I didn't care, the plot moved so quickly and was so compelling. No real plot twists per se except at the end, but even that I saw coming. But still, the ending felt satisfying. So many horror novels these days just fall apart at the end. This one ended nicely, though a few loose ends remained unresolved.
Overall, I enjoyed this book immensely and will definitely read more from this author.
