Mind Games (Mind Games, #1)

This is going to be one of those books that people will love or hate. First off, it is really short- less than 200 pages, so you can read it in a couple of hours. But, the thing that will make it controversial is the style of writing. If you liked the Shatter Me series, you would probably like this. She doesn't go crazy with the metaphors, but she writes in that stream of consciousness way that reminds me of those books. I didn't mind that style, so it didn't bother me while reading the story. I like when any type of artist explores different styles, as long as it is still relatable, and there is reason behind it.
In this book, we meet two sisters, Annie, who is blind, and her sister, Fia, who is younger, but feels a responsibility for her sister since their parents died. Annie has flashes of visions of the future and is recruited by a special school to "help" her, but they take Fia along as well. The school turns out to have evil intentions and when they realize that Fia has more remarkable abilities than her sister, they start using her to do their dirty work by holding her sister hostage. Her mind can't handle the things she is made to do, but she has to keep her sister alive.
I found the relationship between the sisters really interesting because they were co-dependent and completely lying to themselves and each other about the other one. In some ways, the relationship was toxic to both of the girls, but they were stuck with each other and stuck in this situation that forced them to live with terrible guilt each day over the wrongs they felt they had done to the other. I really liked Fia and even James, the bad boy. He could really only be the one who truly understands her and has enough anger to possibly want to turn into a future good guy - maybe?
