Elizabeth Moon's "Trading in Danger" proves that getting kicked out of military school might be the best thing that ever happened to Kylara Vatta. When this headstrong daughter of a merchant dynasty gets handed a "milk run" command of a condemned ship (complete with babysitting crew), she does what any self-respecting space captain would do – turns it into an adventure that would make Honor Harrington proud.

The book starts with a strange anomaly that echoes across centuries: violin music, a flash of darkness, a glimpse of somewhere very alien. Emily Mandel connects lives from 1912 to a far-future moon colony in this rather good time travel journey that's less about solving mysteries than asking what makes life meaningful when reality itself feels uncertain.
