Hello Newgrounders! This song was created for the 2024 NG Boss Showdown and NG Battle of the Bands 2024

Had a lot of fun with this one. I experimented with combining heavy metal music combined with my more usual electro-dubstep-cybertrance something or another to create this monstrosity. This was also a new attempt at making vocals and lyrics. Not my first time, but I still feel pretty green with it. I went all out with this piece and it definitely tested my range and skill, If you caught yourself headbanging, feel free to leave a 5 star :)

Enjoy, and rock on!

Lyrics

Verse 1

Treacherous challenges of hazardous might

Adrenaline fueling you fight or your flight

This tower ascends to the height or your smite

Brace now for the prizefight

Pray to your god, I've prayed to mine

There's no place to hide

Take your shot, leave nothing behind

Verse 2

Disastrous perils beneath your feet

Hind sight rewards you'll need for me

Arriving to match to your mettle indeed

Face now my tactility

Pray to your god, I've prayed to mine

There's no place to hide

Take your shot, leave nothing behind

The time is ripe under the sky

(Treacherous challenge of hazardous might

Adrenaline fueling you fight or your flight)

How well can your craft how high can you fly?

(Time to test your might)

Buildup

Show your face, intimidate

Your war face now affiliates

Your impressions here attenuate

Your weakness known, your soul will break

----wub dubs----

Chorus

Amour up for battle

It's time to fight

Time to fly your mettle

Let soundwaves bite

Amour up for battle

It's time to fight

Time to fly your mettle

It's time to fight

-----wall of sound----

Chorus

Amour up for battle

It's time to fight

Time to fly your mettle

Let soundwaves bite

Amour up for battle

It's time to fight

Test your might

Amour up

Time to fight

Fly your mettle

Test your might

Amour up

Time to fight

Fly your mettle

Test your might

---metal break---

Refrain

Disastrous perils beneath your feet

Hind sight rewards you'll need for me

Arriving to match to your mettle indeed

Face now my tactility

(Ahs)

Test your might

Heyo, here to judge. First of all, great song.

The mixing, I've nothing to say, it's as good as it can get (apart from a particularly weak snare at 3:20, so I've gotta at least count that lol). Punchy drums, well-balanced mix and pretty interesting sound design.

The structure is incredibly dynamic (cool key change), with twinges or full-on switches to dubstep, which I would've found incredibly cheesy if they weren't made this well. The little break in each verse with the synthetic organ getting a hold of the space was a great idea, also playing around with the accents multiple times. The gritty riffs overall are extremely memorable, and work well off each other.

I appreciate the originality and choice to add vocals, the lyrics are pretty fun; but the execution was not on the same level as every other element in the song. I'm not talking about the growls/guttural sounds, those are really good and on-brand (2:46 may in fact be my favourite part of the whole song), however there are tangible quality drops when the more neutral voice sings in verses and bridges. They may be just a bit out-of-tune, but their biggest downfall is *not being confident at all*: I'm not gonna be scared of a big menacing adversary if their lines are delivered with almost no drive; it's a shame you couldn't deliver the same way you did the more metal parts.

As for the rest, really really solid.

Restlessness check: 13/15

I like the fade-in at the beginning and the emotion behind the lyrics at :09. The high-pass on the drums is a little strong for my tastes, and I think the vocals could be mixed a little more up-front in the mix at times. The instrumental tracks are great, though - love the seamless combo of synths and guitars. I enjoy the contrast between the ascending vocal line and demonic response at 1:20, too. The vocals at 1:30 could’ve blended a bit better together, but the rhythmic bridge at 1:43 was a nice “reset” moment, and that in turn transitioned nicely into the more high-octane section at 2:20 or so. Overall, the production quality here is really nice, and I’m impressed with the variety and structuring here. You channel the energy really well throughout, and also tell a compelling story in general. The parallel bass/synth solos at 3:15 really hit the spot, and I love how the tenor of the piece “stabilizes” again for the final refrain at 3:30. This is top-to-bottom a really well-done track, Spadezer. Keep up the good work! ^_^

Spadezer responds:

This is encouraging! Glad you liked it. 8 definitely appreciate the critiques on the vocals since this feels like new territory for me.

this do be going hard

Every single time I hear a track by you, my hot take is: "Well, that was different." You don't like being pinned down to just one genre, and I respect the flex. From the very beginning of the track to that final quirky touch, I was here for it. This might be a Weird thing to say, but to me this sounds a bit like Al Yankovic taking on the Heavy Metal genre.

You've done a really good job with the different styles of voice you applied to various parts of the song, and I think there's just enough of a Rock vibe to the regular vocals to make it work. I've got zero complaints with your instrumental mix, and am a big fan of those moments where you strip it all down for the vocal breaks. There's a ton of variation across these four minutes, and each section really feels like it builds upon the previous one.

There are several moments where it sounds like there's some disharmony between the vocal harmonies and the instrumental mix. They come and go quickly, and considering the genre it may be intended, but those moments still sound off to my listening ear.

Suffice to say, I have thoroughly enjoyed my peek Behind the Curtain. You rock pretty hard, man.

Score: 8.4/10

Spadezer responds:

I find I really like to make sure that nothing sounds the same between any of my songs. Which does mean that I end up wondering genres lol. Glad you liked it!

This is a banger! It reminds me of if Pendulum and Flash Flood of Colour-era Enter Shikari joined forces with some power metal bands of the same time. With metal and electronic music being my two favorite styles of music, I love to hear them combined!
