Kevil (The Original Soundtrack) - Track 04: Mr. Yama
Another NewGrounds exclusive sneak peak! I'm releasing a track a day leading up to an album release on Friday June 6th. The previous three tracks are on my profile. Check them out! I know I'm shilling this kind of hard, but I've always put as much effort as I can into creating music. When it comes to actually promoting it...not so much. I'm making an effort to get this soundtrack out into the world. It spans a lot of different genres, and at the risk of sounding arrogant, I'm actually proud of it. I'm old. I think I get to be proud of at least a couple things I've made. Don't worry, we'll be back to business as usual after I get this soundtrack out.
I'm not sure if this is witch house or darkwave or if there's some other term to classify this track. Sometimes genres get kind of blurred and I'm honestly too old to keep up with the distinguishing nuances. At a certain point, does it really matter? This is some dark synthy stuff featuring detuned warbly synths, trap hi hats, drums made from simple synthesis and classic drum machine samples, and a lot of "wood" sounds that I always think of as the knocking on a door drenched in reverb. Some of those are actually wood sounds, others are instruments (like wood blocks) and still others are created by EQuing white noise. This also features a screechy sound for a snare drum that has been a dragon I've been chasing for decades. It's inspired by an IDM track I heard once at a modern dance performance. Unfortunately all I have for reference is my memory...the track was written by a friend of one of the dancers and I have no idea how I'd go about tracking it down. As infuriating as that is, I kind of like the fact that all I can rely on is the unreliability of my own memory. I heard a sound once that had a profound impact on me and at this point, I don't even know if I remember it correctly. I may be chasing a sound that keeps changing in my mind and doesn't actually exist. All I recall is that the sound felt like closely tuned high frequency sine waves that clashed hard, and instead of creating a sort of "chirp" that was popular at the time in experimental electronic circles, it was more of an uncomfortable sustained sound. I say "uncomfortable" in a good way. It created a lot of tension that was super effective.
I'm drip feeding tracks from this soundtrack on NewGrounds leading up to the release. If this caught your eye, it's probably because the album art is awesome. I didn't make that. Stradomyre did. If you like good art, you should definitely follow him. His style is unique, his ideas are badass, and he's exactly the sort of artist you need to get into your eyeballs. Follow him and favorite ALL of his work. https://stradomyre.newgrounds.com/
This is an extended version of a cue I originally wrote for Stradomyre's film "Kevil the Japanese Devil".
His film is awesome. It should be a series. You should watch it and then tell him it should be a series. The animation scene could really use some injection of new ideas and talent and we should collectively push Strad into embracing his destiny as a supreme badass.
There are 7 tracks on this album in total. None of them really sound the same, but I'm proud of all of them. The album drops in full on June 6th. If you like anything you hear, Presave on Spotify or pre-purchase on Bandcamp using this link.

Besides the overpresent hihats it's perfect.
You may not use this work for any purposes.
