API Documentation
⚠️ Important Notice: API Service Changes
As a small, passionate team at MeteoLab Inc., we’ve made the decision to focus our efforts on what we do best: creating exceptional consumer applications with the most accurate precipitation prediction. To achieve this, we’re transitioning our API services throughout 2025.
What’s staying: We remain committed to supporting radar data availability through our website, providing links to radar data sources, and maintaining our tiled map service with composite radar data for personal use.
Timeline of changes:
- Effective immediately: Single radar data limited to last 6 radar images (no more than 48 hours old), new Patreon subscriptions suspended
- August 1, 2025: Processed radar data images discontinued, tiled API limited to zoom level 9
- September 1, 2025: Composite files and nowcast maps discontinued, closed beta API discontinued, rate limiting implemented for tiles (100 requests/IP/minute)
- December 31, 2025: Patreon support discontinued. Unused paid amounts will be refunded
- January 1, 2026: Only the tiled weather radar composite past maps and source radar images (unprocessed) are available for personal use
We understand this impacts many of you who have built amazing projects with our API. We’re grateful for your support and hope you understand that this decision allows us to deliver even better precipitation forecasting in our consumer applications.
For more details, please see our API Transition FAQ.
Thank you for being part of the Rain Viewer community. We’re excited about the future of weather prediction and look forward to continuing to serve you through our consumer applications.
Terms of Use
- The API is free for personal use. Rain Viewer gets radar data from different websites across the Internet. Therefore, we share all this data with everyone for free as well. Use whatever you want.
- We do not guarantee the availability of radar data. We do not conclude contracts with owners of this data. The reason is that the owners can ask us to remove their data from Rain Viewer, change the format, or stop sharing the data. We are trying to keep radar data for as long as possible, but sometimes the owners just stop providing the images.
- You can change any image received by this API without any restrictions (for example, apply a custom color scheme to the images).
- We kindly ask you to mention the Rain Viewer API as a source of the data on your website with a link: https://www.rainviewer.com/
