Assignment No. 1
Due Date: 15/10/2014 for All Students
Problem No. 1
A single line to ground fault occurs in phase a of a three-core cable connected to a 12 MVA, three phase
alternator. With grounded neutral; for the alternator
ohms,
ohm
and
ohm and for the cable upto the fault point
ohm,
ohm and
ohm respectively.
Find the fault current. The generator is excited to give 6.5 kV between the lines and open circuit. What
resistance in the neutral circuit of the generator will bring down the fault current to 900 Amp?
Problem No. 2
A dead earth fault occurs on one conductor of a 3-phase cable supplied by a 5000 kVA, three phase
generator with earthed neutral. The sequence impedances of the alternator are given by
ohms;
ohms and
ohms per phase
The sequence impedance of the line up to the point of fault are ohms, ohms and
ohms. Find the fault current and the sequence components of the fault current. Also find the
line-to-earth voltages on the infaulted lines. The generator line voltage is 6.6 kV.
Problem No. 3
A 20 MVA, 6.6 kV star connected generator has positive, negative and zero sequence reactances of 30%,
25% and 70% respectively. A reactor with 5% reactance based on the rating of the generator is placed in
the neutral to ground connection. A line to line fault occurs at the terminals of the generator when it is
operating at rated voltage. Find the initial symmetrical line to ground r.m.s fault current.
Problem No. 4
Consider a system with sequence impedances given by
and
