A Computer Simulation

A computer simulation is a computer program that attempts to simulate a system using mathematical modeling. Simulations are useful for modeling natural systems in physics, astrophysics, chemistry and biology as well as human systems in economics, psychology, and engineering. They can provide new insights into technology and estimate the performance of complex systems. Advances in simulation modeling have been enabled by growth in computer hardware, software, and methodology, allowing benefits to extend to new areas like recreation management previously not practical to simulate.

A computer simulation

is a computer program, or network of computers, that attempts to simulate an abstract model of a

particular system. Computer simulations have become a useful part of mathematical modeling of many
natural systems in physics (computational physics), astrophysics, chemistry and biology, human systems
in economics, psychology, social science, and engineering. Simulations can be used to explore and gain
new insights into new technology, and to estimate the performance of systems too complex for
analytical solutions.

Description

The field of simulation modeling has grown greatly with recent advances in computer hardware and
software. Much of this work has involved large scientific and industrial applications for which substantial
financial resources are available. However, advances in object-oriented programming and simulation
methodology, concurrent with dramatic increases in computer capabilities and reductions in computer
hardware costs, have meant that the benefits of simulation can be extended to areas that previously
have been impractical. This includes recreation management.
