Introduction to the
Seven Secrets of Certification
This quick overview will identify and explain all seven of the Secrets, so youll be
off to a great start.
I wrote this program in response to questions like: How do I remember to use all
9 Masteries when I do my certification demonstrations? What does it take to get
a perfect score of 5? What if I get nervous? What if I fail?
Do you wonder about those things, yourself?
Ive had the honor of spending 100s of hours teaching, mentoring, leading
practicums and certifying coaches with the IAC certification skills, as the lead
instructor and lead certifier of the Thomas Leonard Coaching School and as
President of the School of Coaching Mastery and over time, several patterns
have appeared to me, so that now I can articulate seven masterful skills or
come-froms, that some coaches express and others dont. When I hear
coaches demonstrate all of these 7 masterful skills, I get goosebumps!
I cant tell you what a pleasure it is to pass coaches who coach at this level. Its
an abundant affirmation that the late Thomas Leonards dream of a certification
that actually measures great coaching really does work!
Thomas is credited with having founded the coaching industry and he also
founded the IAC, because he believed there were too many mediocre coaches
and that the profession would only thrive if we raised the level of coaching
worldwide. The IAC and the School of Coaching Mastery continue to raise the
quality of coaching and thousands of coaching clients benefit every year.
Seven Secrets of Certification is a whole new program for coaches who are
already studying and practicing coaching skills and who are ready to become
fully masterful and get certified. This ebook will give you a taste of what its all
about. Itll tell you what the secrets are to great coaching, but if youre like most
coaches, youll need assistance with the how of achieving it. If youre serious,
give yourself everything you need to succeed. Youre worth it!

So lets get down to business and take a look at the Seven Secrets, so you know
what they are. In future chapters, well go further in depth with each Secret.
But lets start with the first Secret, right now. By looking at one of those questions
that I mentioned earlier, that coaches ask me about certification, namely,
How do I remember to use all 9 Masteries in my certification demonstration?
I used to wonder that, myself, when I was preparing for certification. Do I keep a
list of them on my desk to refer to? Do I score myself as Im coaching? Is there a
formula or script I can follow? The answer to all of these questions is an
emphatic No. None of those things will work very well for you.
In fact, the simple answer to the question, How do I remember to use all 9
Masteries in my certification demonstration? is, You dont.
Dont even try to remember them.
Well thats great, you might say, but I do have to demonstrate all nine, so can
you offer me something a little more useful? Okay, thats where the first Secret
comes in and here it is, The coach must:
1. Be 100% for the client.
Great coaching never has an agenda. Its never about the coach. Its ALL about
the client. This means that if youre trying to use the masteries, youre harming
the quality of your coaching and youre not showing up as great as you could be.
The flow of the coaching wont be natural and the quality will suffer as a result.
Thats why the coach needs to be 100% for the client. Put the client first and
forget youre being tested. The irony is that youll naturally use the Masteries
even more.
Being completely for the client is an act of generosity and courage and those are
two qualities that masterful coaches possess in abundance. When you are
coming from this place, you are truly great and the masteries will naturally flow
from that place of greatness.
You also wont get nervous if you are 100% for the client, because your focus will
be off you and on them. Youll forget youre even being scored.
So use that as a test of sorts. If youre worrying about how youre doing on the
test, youre not focused on the client. Shift your focus and youll instantly do
better.
Okay, lets look at the second secret, now. Many coaches hurt their scores by
Copyright, Julia Stewart, 2005-2009
All rights reserved.

being in expert mode or by over sharing. They tell more than they ask and since
most of the masteries are based on asking, coaches fail to use many of them,
when they tell too much. Therefore, our second secret is:
2. Makes no assumptions.
This can be said in many ways: Have a beginners mind. Let the client be the
expert. Be curious. Navigate by asking. Its a way of being that leads to a way of
doing, of exploring and going deep, deeper than you and the client can even
imagine sometimes, of being in discovery mode and uncovering whats beneath
the problem or the goal and whats under that and whats under that. Youre
looking for causality. Thats where quantum shifts are made. Thats where you
strike gold in a coaching session.
This is an extremely high level of communication. It involves provocative
conversations, revealing the client, exploring with curiosity, inspiring greatness
and a lot more.
Know that you will never understand completely. Always seek to understand
better. Be humble. At the same time, have the confidence to be wrong, dumb, not
getting it. Thats when you begin to get it!
The point here is that many coaches coach very well, even when they are telling
more than theyre asking. Virtually all of those coaches can coach far better when
they shift to being curious, making no assumptions and asking most of the time.
Lets move on now to #3:
3. Always Validating.
Its great to compliment, congratulate, and admire. If you do that once or twice in
a session, thats good. If you do this from start to finish, thats great. If you come
from this place always and you never make assumptions, you will coach your
client to greatness with ease.
Were of course, talking about perceiving the clients full potential, but also
expanding possibilities and all of the others. This is an evolutionary environment
that will inspire your client to do far more than they knew they were capable of
doing.
Make this a natural environment for yourself, as well and it will, by extension,
become your clients natural environment. They will grow and achieve almost by
accident and your job will become effortless.
What takes this to the nth degree is to employ secret #2 and make no
assumptions, even while youre celebrating. Care enough to continue going
7

deeper, even when everything is going great.

Speaking of greatness, lets go on to secret #4:
4. Inspires greatness
Now this is a bit more than merely eliciting the clients greatness, in one very
crucial way. What Ive observed is that when the coach comes from greatness
herself, the client more easily shifts into his. This is virtually automatic and its not
one directional. When your client is great, its easier for you to be great.
Your job is to inspire greatness all the way around and you can easily do this with
a few tools, but you must be willing to build a strategic environment to evolve you
forward. Are you willing? If so, then when you do, youll be able to become an
evolutionary environment for your client, which is secret #5.
5. Is an evolutionary environment
This is about ownership of what you do as a coach. This goes beyond designing
systems and structures, although it includes that mastery, into knowing that you
ARE an evolutionary environment for your client. Become their source.
How is this an environment? The coach and the coaching session, itself, is an
environment for growth and understanding that can carry over into the clients
life. In this sense, we dont need to wait until weve honed in on whats most
important before we build supportive environments to help the client succeed.
We are offering to be an evolutionary source from the moment the coaching
begins. This requires a different way of thinking and seeing. When youve got it,
youre ready to share wisely, as in #6.
6. Shares wisely
Great coaching is the opposite of interrogation. However, both are a process of
inquiry. While you do want to be asking questions throughout your clients
session, you dont want to just ask questions. You need to share with your client
enough. You know what is just enough by being 100% for you client. Do they
need your opinion right now? Do they need some feedback? A little championing,
perhaps? A personal story? Dont hold back if its in the clients best interests, but
combine it with Makes No Assumptions. Share what you know, feel, suspect,
and then follow with a question: Is that right? Would you agree? Am I on the
right track?
Sharing wisely means to share a little, not a lot, and always follow with a question
or space to find out how it lands with your client. Thats how we navigate
effectively in a coaching session. Finally, theres number 7.

7. Is an open Channel
I played with this one, because its not easy to put into words. Its about love, but
we each bring so much baggage to that word. Its also about greatness, but its
not just the coach and clients greatness. Its more universal. Its certainly about
wisdom and awe and environments and all of the secrets. But it brings in another
element. Its about being wide open to whatever is out there, whether thats the
synergy of the coaching relationship, the energy of the universe, or the power of
intention. Its spiritual in the most elemental way and great coaches have it. You
dont need to be religious or even believe in God to use this one. You just need
to be wide open to whatever tools become available to your client via your
coaching.
Whenever I observe a coaching session, I can tell almost from the very beginning
if its going to be great coaching, because the coach becomes more than just a
human being and the coaching becomes more than a conversation, and the
dynamic is more than two people relating. This is what some people call
Presence, what others call Supermind. What is sometimes called synchronicity.
Whether you call it the presence of God or the power of the Universe, an energy
is present that is just magical. Even if nothing exciting transpires in the session,
and it almost always does, the session is everything the client needs.

~*~
In order to master this material, you must be practicing your coaching skills with
coaches who understand the Masteries and the Seven Coaching Secrets,
because all the classes and reading in the world wont make you an excellent
coach. You can only become one by being one.
In other words, the transformative process occurs via the actual practice of
coaching and via feedback from coaches who know how to listen for it, and even
in the process of observing and giving the feedback. So this ebook is just the
beginning. If youre serious about being a great coach, dont stop here. Do check
the resources we have for you at the end of this book.

Go out and do great work!

Secret #1: Is 100% for the client

The first two masteries really are great together: Being 100% for the client and
Making no assumptions. Together, they cover a lot of masteries and create what
spiritual teacher, Andrew Cohen would call infinite room inside of us for what we
do not know, and a masterful coach knows this on a profound level and brings it
to the coaching session.
We are creating clarity here, clarity for the client and ourselves. To do this, we
must be completely transparent. Do you see that? We cant create complete
clarity for the client unless we are transparent. That means, of course, that we
get our egos out of the way (not our personalities, just our egos) and that we
show up in our own greatness: generous, calm, focused and courageous.
And what do we need to let go of, in order to do that?
Our desire to be great
Our need to provide value
Our need to show that we know how to coach
Our assumptions
Our agendas
Our expertise
Our fear of being wrong
In short, we let go of all ego concern for ourselves. We can do that safely,
because our boundaries are already set. Our needs have been met. Our values
are known and expressed. We have a reserve of everything we really need.
When were able to take our focus off our ego needs and forget ourselves, were
ready to focus 100% on the client. When you have done the work that you need
to get you to this place, this is effortless. If you havent, its impossible. Its a
journey for every coach. Work with your mentor coach to perfect it.
If youre not working on your personal development with your own coach, it may
be time to invest in that. There are lots of affordable coaching programs. Look at
the resource section of this book and get what you need to succeed.
And the work you need to do may be different from someone else. Perhaps you
need to design strategic environments to evolve you forward. Or stretch yourself
through education.
When youve done the work, its easy to shift to a place of greatness. The key is
knowing and embracing the fact that you are completely non-essential to the
11

client. They are perfect already. The problems theyre facing are perfect for them
and they have everything they need to solve their problems, just like Dorothy in
the Wizard of OZ could have used her magic slippers to go home anytime she
wanted. Our clients will have the wisdom to ask us for the help they need, if we
just show up in our greatness. (Glenda, the good witch didnt tell Dorothy about
the slippers, because Dorothy didnt ask. Glenda, by the way, was an incredible
coach!)
A great coach has the wisdom to both evoke clarity and wait for it to emerge and
is content to let the mud settle in the pond, so to speak, rather than jump the
water in a stir it up even more.
Thats what it means to be 100% for the client and the Masteries that are
most expressed here are:
1. Establishing and maintaining a relationship of trust
2. Perceiving, affirming and expanding the clients potential
3. Listening
4. Processing in the present
In fact, if youre coaching at the level of mastery, every Mastery will express
Secret #1.

12

Secret #2: Makes no assumptions

Lets move on to Mastery #2: Makes no assumptions. Again, were defining
clarity, here. The truth emerges because we make no pre-conceived judgments
about what the truth may be. This is hard for our egos, because they want to be
right. Instead, we risk being wrong, even looking foolish. We need to show up
with the naivety of a small child coupled with the wisdom of a sage. Hows that
for a tall order?!
This is Beginners mind. It requires another aspect of greatness, that of
possessing confidence and humility at the same time. We have no word for this
in the English language and tend to think of confidence as arrogance and
associate humility with low self esteem. Actually, neither of these is healthy.
True confidence and true humility, in fact, go hand in hand. So I coined a silly
word for confidence with humility: Confility When you have that, you know
what you know, you know what you dont know and you know that you can learn
whatever needs to be learned. All you have to do is create that infinite space
inside yourself for what you do not already know - and keep asking.
Interesting, clarity comes more easily when more than one person is involved. If
coaches are essential in any way, that is it. We are the other person. We function
like a receiver for the clients solution, but were not responsible for having the
solution.
Lets look at the Masteries that are most expressed by Secret #2:
4. Processing in the present
6. Clarifying
8. Invite possibilities
Again, making no assumptions will appear in every Mastery, when you coach at
a masterful level.
What do you need to let go of to master this one?
Let go of relating what the client says to what you already know
Let go of thinking you understand
Letting go thinking you already know the answer
Let go of the need to be right
Let go of needing to have the answers

13

Secret #3: Always Validating

Mastery #3 is Always Validating. Most coaches do this way too little. They may
feel that they wont sound natural, that they may come off as fake. If this is a
problem for you, work on yourself to get to a place where you naturally validate
everyone and everything in your life. This is a come from, not just something you
do. When you get to the place where you can be grateful even for the toxic
people and rotten situations that pass through your life (and admittedly, this can
be a challenge!), or at least get to the place where you can relish them, then
youll find naturally validating your client in everyway possible is very easy to do.
Learn to enjoy your clients, even when they make the same old mistakes, even
when they forget the great stuff you taught them, even when they are incredibly
annoying - just enjoy them. Every clients presents you with an opportunity to
grow to a place where you can enjoy them and their gifts and weaknesses
immensely and that was a big upgrade for anyone. Learn to enjoy, be grateful
and express it via acknowledgement and validation.
If you want to work on this one, and I recommend that you do, because it is an
important key to truly great coaching, then see if you are ready to truly appreciate
everything and everybody in your life and practice sharing out loud that
appreciation. People that youve known for a long time, may need to get used to
this, but they will come to enjoy it, quickly.
Im not suggesting that you become a Stepford Coach, by the way. You will still
find yourself having negative reactions for the rest of your life and you need to be
grateful for those, as well, because they give you important information, but you
do need to see the perfection in everything (even when it sucks!).
Lets look at the Masteries on your list that go with Secret #3: Perceives, affirms
and expands the clients potential is obviously an important mastery here. The
key here is the word, always.
How can you always perceive, affirm and expand your clients potential?
Your tone of voice keep it light
Your come from: Truly come from a place of knowing how extraordinary
your client is
Be 100% for your client
Come from this in your life, not just your coaching
Always want the best for your client

Copyright, Julia Stewart, 2005-2009

All rights reserved.

14

Heres a tip: Exclamations like Great! Wow! Awesome! All work here, but they do
need to be natural to you, so choose your own vocabulary. Just be sure to share
it verbally on an ongoing basis, without getting in the clients way. Dont assume
that your client knows youre for them. Most people have never had a
relationship with anyone who is 100% for them. We need to train our clients to
get used to this. That may also mean working up to this mastery gradually as you
develop your relationship with your client. Some clients may have difficulty
hearing this at first, but if your focus is 100% on them, you will be able to detect
this. Use your intuition to guide you.

Secret #4: Inspires Greatness

Secret #4, Inspires Greatness, naturally flows from #3, Always Validating.
Inspires Greatness is about inspiring yourself, as well as your client. If you show
up fully great, eliciting the clients greatness will naturally follow. Because
greatness is contagious. When you are in this place, your client more easily shifts
to it, even if you dont do anything to cause it.
Also, fully seeing the clients greatness, requires that you be standing in your
own. Using Secret #3, Always Validating, invites the clients greatness to come
out and inspires yours, too. Because validating is an aspect of love. Greatness
and unconditional love are essentially the same thing. (Read Debbie Fords The
Right Questions.)
The clients greatness is the primary thing we reveal to them. Their assumptions
and weakness may be important to point out sometimes, but ultimately its their
greatness that we reveal. You want to get to where you recognize perfection and
relish everything, even when you wish it could be different. This frankly is a
spiritual journey. Please try to read everything on the book list that is included at
the end of this book to understand this better.
To inspire your own greatness, you may need to build an evolutionary
environment for yourself to evolve you to greatness. Elements to include:
Work with a mentor coach who is well on this path. Thats one of the chief
values of a great mentor coach.
Upgrade the people you surround yourself with - since greatness is
contagious (and so is small, ego-based thinking), surround yourself with
people who are great. You become who you hang out with.
Expose yourself to great ideas. Read books on the reading list at the end
of this ebook. Take seminars; go back to school. Visit websites that help
expand your thinking. Here are just a few:

Develop a regular spiritual practice, meditation, prayer, rituals.

Do centering exercises before each coaching session.
Surround yourself with nature and beauty.
Remove things from your environment that make it hard for you to be
great.
Finally, simply notice whenever you slip into toxic, ego-based thinking, but
dont judge yourself, because the ego loves to judge!

Secret #5: Is an evolutionary environment

Secret #5, Is an evolutionary environment, certainly contains the Mastery,
Designs supportive systems and structures, but takes it much deeper. In this
secret, you recognize that you have become an important element in your clients
evolutionary habitat. That by talking with you, an evolved coach who shows up
100% for your client, they will grow in the direction that they need in order to
solve new challenges that arise in their ever-changing world. You evolve them
forward into their greatness, by engaging in transformative conversations,
opening up new worlds and more. What youre really designing here is strategic
evolution and this is enormously attractive to clients!
What do I mean by strategic evolution? This is a helicopter view of your client
and their world. You need to be able to see where they are and see where they
may be able to go and hold that vision, even if they cant see it yet.
You cant evolve them by trying to change them; you can only set up a habitat
that encourages them to evolve. That means you get a feel for how much
discomfort can they handle before they regress, how much challenge gets them
juiced and how much just overwhelms them.
Youre not there just for nice chats. Nice chats encourage people to stay the
same. Be willing to increase your level of courageousness. If you avoid the
elephant in the room when you coach a client, because youre afraid the client
will fire you if you address an uncomfortable subject, youre letting your client
down. More often a client will fire a coach because they just arent getting to the
truth and thats holding them back.
You are an evolutionary environment. Your job is to co-create life conditions that
bring out your clients full potential. Sometimes that means giving your client big
problems, sometimes it means just taking the pressure off, when clients have
already given themselves big problems! Be sure that your own personal evolution
is enough ahead of your clients. At the same time, be able to empathize with
where the client is now.
Lets look at Masteries that are expressed by this Secret:
4. Processes in the present
7. Helps the client set and keep clear intentions
8. Expands possibilities
9. Designs supportive structures and systems
And of course you will use this Secret while expressing all of the Masteries.

18

Secret #6: Shares wisely

Lets move on now to Secret # 6, Shares wisely. This one is about sharing
exactly what the client needs exactly when the client needs it. How do you know?
You dont! There are no guarantees in coaching. What you need is a finely tuned
antenna, one that is tuned to your clients needs by way of their responses and
their energy. This is another aspect of being 100% for your client. If you can do
that, much of the rest will simply follow.
A key point here is that you dont want to over-share and thats what we often
see coaches doing when they are sitting for certification. Navigating via telling is
mediocre coaching. Instead, assume nothing and ask.
In fact, a smart strategy is whenever you share, also follow up with a
question. Such as:
You sound a little nervous today, whats up?
You have a wonderful way of expressing yourself, where did you learn
that?
I can think of a few options here, do you want to hear them?
This is neither a gimmick, nor a guarantee, but it is a brilliant coaching technique
that leads to magical coaching. The client is more likely to get what they need
and youre more likely to get certified! ;-)
How do you do this?
Always be asking
Offer advice sparingly
Dont over share
Do follow shares with questions
Invite your client to enter new territories
Offer feedback and leave space for the client to take it in
Which Masteries express Secret 6?
5. Expressing
6. Clarifying
7. Helps the client set and keep clear intentions

Secret #7: Is an open channel

This one Secret is responsible for taking the coaching to a profound level. Its
closely related to Inspires Greatness, but has an additional element. It
recognizes that its not our individual greatness that is really important. Nor is our
clients individual greatness really the objective. Greatness isnt something we
possess, so much as something we tap into. Many thinkers through out the ages
have tried to fathom what this is and where it comes from. I could make up my
own story about it, but Im going to try to avoid that. Suffice it to say that any
explanation that we have is probably a metaphor, but metaphors do help us to
tap into it.
This is sometimes referred to presence or Global Mind, or God, the Field, or the
Ground of Being. You can tap into it, regardless of your own beliefs. You dont
even need to believe in God. But the sensation, when it occurs is paradoxical. It
is, at once, as if you have tapped deep into your own heart-knowing and at the
same time are receiving information from outside of yourself. It doesnt matter
where it comes from. When you become a channel for this deeper-higher
wisdom, you coach brilliantly.
So how do we tap into it?
Meditation
Visualization
Affirmation
Relaxation
Education
Inspirational reading
Prayer
Thats why I mentioned previously that you may want to do exercises to center
yourself before a coaching call to access this place, yourself.
I can teach you about it, but truthfully, if youre not ready to understand what Im
talking about, you wont get it. The reading list that I gave you will help, especially
if you augment it with a spiritual practice.
Two important steps in accessing deeper-higher wisdom, include cessation of
thought and commitment to awareness. By ceasing to think our usual thoughts in
our usual preconditioned patterns, we open the possibility to think differently, to
see differently, to step out of seeing problems, to see the wider picture that

20

includes the dynamics and the source of the dynamics, something our clients are
almost always missing. By committing ourselves to awareness, we open
ourselves to the information we need. In this case, we are committing ourselves
to being 100% for the client, to not attending to our usual personal needs. Thats
why radical self care is so vital for the coach, so that we can cease thinking of
ourselves and commit to the greater wisdom available to us in service to
uncovering our clients path.
Makes no assumptions is a symptom of being an open channel, to suspending
what we think we know in service of finding what is truly there. This is a joyful
experience, so always validating is also a symptom being an open channel. The
coach naturally becomes an evolutionary environment for the client and
instinctively shares wisely.
Masteries that a particularly expressed here are:
3. Listening
4. Processing in the present
8. Invite possibility
