PART I: READING COMPREHENSION

Passage 1
In explaining what goes on in the market under actual circumstances rather tahan under
a model of perfect
competition. The Alchemy of Finance: Reading the Mind of Market also offers a radical
theoetical departure from a
classical economics (which says Soros, “resembles science but does not resembles
reality”). His theory “of reflexifity” is to
economics Heisenberg‟s “uncertainty principle” is to physics. Markets are always
pushed in one direction or another by the
participants‟ biases, says Soros, so the classical concept of equilibrium is not only faulty
in theory but irrelevant in practice.
Soros uses his theory to explain recent national and international developments (the
boom and the bust of in international
lending, the rise and the fall of the dollar, the “bull market of our lifetime”) in context of a
“reflexive” relationship
between market participants and policy makers who both act on the basis of their
imperfect understanding. The Alchemy of
Finance: Reading the Mind of Market show how the contradiction between monetarism
and supply-side economics has
produced a self-reinforcing/self-defeating “Imperial Circle” in which the United States,
