Industry 4.0 Reflection Paper

In a reflection paper, the author discusses attending a discussion on patent drafting and industry 4.0 which introduced topics that had not been covered in their faculty before, such as emerging technologies and their potential applications. The author believes that as computer engineers, it is important to collaborate across disciplines and be aware of other fields and how technology can provide solutions, in order to innovate devices that meet patent requirements of novelty, inventive step, and industrial application so they can be legally protected.

Reflection Paper

The discussion about patent drafting and industry 4.0 was a very interesting discussion as nobody
from our faculty has mentioned this topic about industry 4.0 before although they inform us about IoT and AI
very often. Although it is not yet taught in class as a formal subject, we are already seeing it and hearing
about this trend from seminars and workshops that we attend during free time and I think this is a good
opportunity for us in the technology sector to really think deeper about the potential use of these emerging
technologies and collaborate more with other disciplines. Computer engineering is a course that requires
strong interpersonal skills as computers systems like general electronics, and software are things used by
the public from different disciplines like the Japanese self-driving grain harvester which is used by Japanese
farmers so we really need to be aware of what other disciplines do and how we can provide solutions to their
problems. With that being said, I really see the need to know how to draft patents so that any device that we
can innovate or invent, something that has: novelty, an inventive step, and an industrial application can be
safely protected by the law from being used, and reproduced without permission.
