WELCOME REMARKS

DIRECTOR OF THE PROGRAMME

Greetings and salutation, I’m Asyraf and it is a pleasure to welcome


everyone to this year's MAPSA Conference 2019 at Universiti Kebangsaan
Malaysia. As the director of this event, I am delighted to have you with us to
participate in making this event a very special one. It is truly an honor to be the
director of this event as I was just a participant at University of Reading Malaysia,
Johor Bahru, last year. I was truly amazed by the conference and gained some
knowledge along the way. I would like to say thank you to those involved today
and a big shout out to those that have traveled a long distance to make this
conference a memorable one. I would also like to thank the committee for all
their hard work as they tirelessly worked to ensure that this program runs
smoothly. Have a great conference!

INTRODUCTION

About Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) is a


research university that was born from the aspiration of
Malaysian to promote the sovereignty of the national language,
Bahasa Melayu. Thus, Bahasa Melayu is used as the main language
in our academic activites. UKM was officially opened on Mei 1970.
UKM main campus is located in Bangi while another 2 branch campuses are at Kuala
Lumpur and Cheras.

UKM actively encourage research among the students and academicians by


discovering beneficial ideas which benefit the society. The university is committed in
providing the suitable environment and module to increase the potential of a student.
UKM is an education hub which holding the motto “Inspiring Futures, Nurturing
Possibilities” to create a better society.

About Malaysian Psychological Association

PSIMA established a National Academic Council which brings all the higher
institutions in Malaysia that offer psychology course together. The institutions mainly
work with the government in registration of professional psychologist which will secure
the profession of psychology. PSIMA encourage the members to cooperate and
partnership in doing the research. Over the years, PSIMA has committed in organizing
various events and project to achieve their goals, including the Malaysian Psychology
Student Assembly (MAPSA) Conference.

About Malaysian Psychology Student Assembly

Each year, the MAPSA members will rotate in organizing the conference that will
be held annually. The MAPSA conference will gather the undergraduate and
postgraduate from universities around Malaysia to present their researches and findings.
This year, we are honor to host the MAPSA Conference at our university UKM, Bangi
with the theme “Identifying and Differentiating Pseudo Psychology from Psychology”.

Assoc Prof. Dr Rachel Pye


University of Reading, Malaysia

Assoc Prof. Dr Rachel Pye is currently the Head of Psychology & Clinical Language
Sciences and Academic Director of Teaching & Learning in University of Reading, Malaysia. She
graduated with PhD in Psychology at University of Reading. During her PhD studies, she
predicted improvement in reading in dyslexic children for her thesis. Her areas of interest are
in the relationship between orthography and phonology, specifically in dyslexia and in skilled
reading in different languages.

Assoc Prof. Dr. Rozainee Khairuddin


Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia

Assoc Prof. Dr. Rozainee Khairuddin is currently the Deputy Dean of Faculty of Social
Sciences and Humanities at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, UKM. Graduated from Birmingham
University, United Kingdom, she is also one of the lecturers in the Department School of
Psychology and Human Development. Her research interests are mainly in Cognitive
Psychology, Cognitive Science and Cognitive Neuroscience. She is currently the president for
Malaysia Psychology Association (PSIMA).

Dr Marieke de Vries
University Of Nottingham, Malaysia

Dr Marieke de Vries graduated with clinical neuropsychology at the University of


Amsterdam. She specialized in neuropsychology in children. After graduating (MSc), Dr. Marieke
worked with children with various diagnoses as a psychologist. She focused on her PhD project
on Executive Functions in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Dr. Marieke
worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Amsterdam, the Academic Medical
Center, and the VU medical center in Amsterdam after gaining her PhD.
