Faculty of law

The faculty of law of the University of Sindh is among the faculties established as early as in
1950 under the University of Sindh Act-1947 with such outstanding personalities as Honorable
Justice Tayabji as the first Dean. However, it remained practically dormant as the LL.B teaching
was conducted through Government law colleges affiliated to the University. It was revived in
1989 through the statutes framed under 1972 Act of the University of Sindh.

With increasing demand for legal education new Law Colleges have been established in Public
and Private sector as well. Presently, 7 Law Colleges (4 in Public and 3 in Private sector) are
affiliated with the University of Sindh. Six of the colleges are offering 3 years LL.B Degree
program and one is offering LL.B (5 year) Degree program as per regulations of the Pakistan Bar
Council.

With growing demand for experts and highly qualified professionals, under the changing socio-
political scenario, it was felt that legal education at Master level be imparted. The University of
Sindh therefore, established the Department of Law in July 2005 to offer two year LL.M
program (Evening). The Department was officially inaugurated by the then Chief Justice Sindh
High Court; late Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and LL.M classes were started under evening
program. Subsequently the Department of Law was promoted to Institute of Law in 2008-9. Mr
Mohammed Yousuf Laghari was the first Chairman of the Department and became Director of
the Institute of Law. Professor Ahmed Ali Sheikh was Dean Faculty of Law at the time of
establishment of Department of Law and continued till 01-07-2011. On 02-07-2011 Mr Jhamat
Jethanand is appointed as Dean Faculty of Law for 3 years. On 19-08-2014 his term was
extended for further period of three years.

The University has also pioneered the introduction of Bachelor of Law (Hons) five years (Ten
semesters) Degree program. That would fulfill the long felt demand to produce full time
educated professionals, to meet the challenges in the global context. The 1st batch was inducted
in October 2008 and teaching commenced in February 2009. The said batch passed out in 2013.
