Internet makes our lives easy and simple. The internet provides
us useful data, information, and knowledge for personal, social
and economic development. It is up to us how we can use up our
time on World Wide Web productively and efficiently.

OBJECTIVES
After the completion of this module, learners will be able to:
 launch a browser to access the internet;
 locate a website with the URL;
 use a browser’s navigation tools;
 find information using search engines;
 refine search keywords;
 download and save files; and
 manage bookmarks.

LAUNCHING A BROWSER & ACCESSING THE INTERNET

A web browser (commonly referred to as a browser) is a software application for accessing information on the World Wide
Web. Each individual web page, image, and video is identified by a distinct URL, enabling browsers to retrieve and display them
on the user's device.
A web browser is not the same thing as a search engine, though the two are often confused. For a user, a search engine is just
a website, such as google.com, that stores searchable data of other
websites. But in order to connect to and display websites on their
device, a user needs to have a web browser installed.

USING NAVIGATION TOOLS
The navigation tool bar is located at the top of the browser and contains navigational buttons for the Web. The basic
functions of these buttons include:
Back – Takes you to the page you accessed before the current page
Forward – Takes you to the page you accessed next to the current page
Refresh – Refresh/reloads current page
Home – Opens or returns to starting page

USING SEARCH ENGINES

There is an enormous amount of
information on the Web! However, there's an
easy way for you to find specific information
without searching through every site yourself.
Just use a search engine.

Most search engines work the same basic

way. You type into a search box the
information you're looking for and PRESTO!
The search engine lists Web sites that contain
this information. These results are known as
"hits." The words you type into the search box
are called "keywords." The keywords you use
will greatly affect your results.

REFINING YOUR SEARCH KEYWORDS

1. Use precise keywords/Keep it simple

When entering keyword make it as precise as possible. Instead of using complete sentences, search for keywords or
phrases to find what you’re looking for. You don’t need to worry about correct spelling, case or punctuation.
EXAMPLE: Instead of searching How to cook Tinolang Manok, search Tinolang Manok Recipe.

2. Search for an exact phrase or quote

If you want to identify the source of a quote or phrase, or exclude any website that doesn’t include the exact phrase you
are looking for, then simply place the search term in quotation marks (“”).
EXAMPLE: “Tinolang Manok” Recipe

3. Exclude a word from search results

If you want to prevent a certain word
from appearing in search results, simply
place a dash or minus symbol directly
before the word you wish to omit:
EXAMPLE: Top 10 hobbies -fishing

Have you ever wanted to search for a film title,
song line, or quote from a book only to find you
have forgotten certain key words? Just simply

words.
EXAMPLE: * way lyrics

5. Perform a Reverse Image Search

By performing a reverse image search, you can
track the origin of an image and see where else
it is posted online. Also, Google provide other
images that are similar or related. Just go to
images.google.com, click the camera icon
and upload your image. Google will display search result related to the image you uploaded.

6. Search within a single website

One of Google’s most useful features, especially
for researchers, is its ability to search within a
single website. To search a single site, simply

BOOKMARKING A WEBPAGE
If you find a website you want to view later, it can
be hard to memorize the exact web address. Bookmarks,
also known as favorites, are a great way to save and
organize specific websites so you can revisit them again
and again. Simply locate and select the Star icon to
bookmark the current website.
