CE-616: Structural Dynamics Assignment 1: September, 23:59 PM

This document outlines an assignment for a structural dynamics course. It includes 6 questions assessing concepts like modeling the motion of an airplane landing gear system, deriving differential equations of motion, determining stiffness and damping coefficients from a free vibration test, analyzing damped harmonic oscillation, and modeling the motion of a automatically closing door. Students must submit a scanned PDF with all solutions by September 5th at 11:59pm. No late submissions or plagiarized work will be accepted.

ASSIGNMENT 1
Total marks: 100, Due date: 5th September, 23:59 pm.
Submission mode: A scanned pdf containing all solutions need to be uploaded. Submission
windows would auto close. No late submissions would be entertained under any circumstances.
Note: Any plagiarism or cheating will directly attract zero marks and reduction to your
grades.

1. An airplane landing gear system is modeled as a

lumped mass m attached to an airplane (mass
M>>m) by a spring and a dashpot as illustrated in
the figure. The tire forces transmitted to the mass
m are modeled as resulting from the motion of
the bottom of the spring k2. Assume that the
airplane travels at a constant speed V over a
sinusoidally rough runway. Determine the
equation of motion of the landing gear mass m.
Since M>>m, assume horizontal motion of the
heavy airplane mass. (20 marks)

2 Derive the differential equation governing

the free vibration motion of the system
using the translational displacement, x, as
the degree of freedom. The mass of the disc
is m and the moment of inertia of the pulley
is Ip. Disc rolls without slipping and no
slippage occurs at the pulley. (20 marks)

3 The stiffness and damping properties of a mass–spring–damper system are to be determined

by a free vibration test; the mass is given as m = 0.1 lb-sec2/in. In this test the mass is
displaced 1 in. by a hydraulic jack and then suddenly released. At the end of 20 complete
cycles, the time is 3 sec and the amplitude is 0.2 in. Determine the stiffness and damping
coefficients. (10 marks)

4 For the system shown in the Figure:

(a) Determine the damping ratio
(b) State whether the system is underdamped,
critically damped, or overdamped
(c) Determine x(t) for the given initial conditions.
(20 marks)

5 The restroom door shown in the Figure is equipped with a torsional

spring and a torsional viscous damper so that it automatically
returns to its closed position after being opened. The door has a
mass of 60 kg and a centroidal moment of inertia about an axis
parallel to the axis of the door’s rotation of 7.2 kg-m2. The torsional
spring has a stiffness of 25 N m/rad.
(a) Show that the motion of a critically damped system due to
initial displacement u(0) and initial velocity u(0) is:
u (t ) = u (0) + u (0) + n u (0)  t e − t
n

(b) What is the damping coefficient such that the system is

critically damped?
(c) A man with an armload of packages, but in a hurry, kicks the
door to cause it to open. What angular velocity must his kick impart
to cause the door to open 70 degrees?
(d) How long after his kick will the door return to within 5 of
completely closing?
(15+5+5+5=30 marks)
