Lab: Investigating Speed: Exploration

This document outlines an experiment to investigate how different variables affect the speed of a car moving down a ramp. Students will measure the time it takes the car to travel a set distance using video capture and calculations. They will collect data in a table and analyze the results in a graph to determine how their chosen variable, such as ramp angle, influences speed. The document provides guidance on properly designing the experiment, collecting reliable data, and evaluating the results and methodology.

Lab : Investigating speed

Exploration :

How can you work out the speed of the car :

How can you calculate the acceleration of the car :

What variables may have an influence on the speed of the car coming down a ramp ?

Investigate the influence of one of these variables on the speed of the car (what is your independent
variable/dependent variable)

Use video capture of the motion to measure the time needed for a certain distance.

Measuring time using a video:

 Measure the distance for which you want to take measurments on your slope and make the begin
and endpoint of this distance clearly visible.
 Take a video of the car’s motion on the slope.
 Watch the video and measure the time related to the distance. (if time is not directly mentioned,
you will have to calculate it using the time frame rate.

Think: how can you make the distance travelled on the slope clearly visible in your video?

Analysis

Collect your data in an appropriate table (repeat each measurement at least 3 times).
Do the necessary calculations.

Conclusion :

Present your result in a graph.

How does your chosen variables influences the speed of the car ?

Evaluation :

Why did you have to repeat measurements ?

How can you improve/ extend your experiment.
