Asme B 31 Details

The document provides guidelines for preheat temperature requirements for welding various metals with different thicknesses and compositions. It lists the minimum preheat temperature required in Celsius and Fahrenheit for carbon steel, alloy steel, martensitic steel, nickel steel, and chromium steel depending on their thickness, carbon content, and yield strength. It also provides acceptance criteria for non-destructive testing methods like radiographic, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, and liquid penetrant testing based on the size and number of imperfections allowable.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
FOR RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING : TABLE 341.3.1 pg. no. 84
For MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING : para 344.3.2 pg. no .89
For ULTRASONIC TESTING : para 344.6.2 PG. NO. 90

Acceptance Criteria.
Acceptance criteria shall be as described in (a) or (b).
(a) A linear-type discontinuity is unacceptable if the amplitude of the indication exceeds
the reference level and its length exceeds.

(1) 6 mm (1∕4 in.) for Tw 19mm (3∕4 in.)

(2) Tw/3 for 19 mm (3∕4 in.) <Tw 57mm (21∕4 in.)
(3) 19 mm (3∕4 in.) for Tw > 57mm (21∕4 in.)
(b) The fracture-mechanics-based ultrasonic examination acceptance criteria in
Appendix R may be used if all requirements of Appendix R are met.

For LIQUID PENETRANT TESTING : para 344.4.2 PG. NO. 89

An indication of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that

causes it; however, the size of the indication is the basis for acceptance
evaluation.
Only indications that have any dimension greater than 1.5 mm (1∕16in.) shall be
considered relevant.
(a) Indications

(1) A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times its width.

(2) A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with a length equal
to or less than three times its width.

(b) Examination.
All surfaces to be examined shall be free of
(1) Relevant linear indications
(2) Relevant rounded indications >5.0 mm (3∕16 in.)
(3) Four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by 1.5 mm (1∕16
in.) or less, edge to edge
