CURRICULUM GUIDE
ENGLISH GRAMMAR
Prepared By:

BSEd2-A
I. Introduction
The purpose of this guide highlights the importance of grammar awareness and English
proficiency, where students will be more knowledgeable in terms of sentence structure. This has
been an issue or concern especially for college students who are encountering problem by means
of grammar, including the fluency in speaking, reading and writing in English, it is obvious that
inadequate knowledge of English grammar affects the performance and the academic progress of
students. Grammar plays an important role in the language learning process that will help
language learners to have a wide and better understanding in the language, applying its structure
accurately such as putting words in a grammatically correct way.
This proposal is not just for the benefits of one; but its contribution is for all instead. As
everyone knows, English is a universal language that helps people welcoming diverse ethnicities
to build and continue such conversation, however, one aspect on using English Language is its
grammar, and it is considered as the sound of the language. Native English speakers recognizes
what we called grammar and they are able to communicate with grammatically correct sentences,
on the other hand, non-native speakers whose mother tongue is not similar with native English
speakers may possibly face difficulties in terms of grammar, and for some, understanding
grammar seems to be difficult.
Grammar is defined as the way of language manipulates and combines words in order to
form a longer unit of meaning (Ur, 1996).
Le Tourneau (2001) expressed that one’s knowledge of grammar is helpful at the stages
of revising and editing sentences because grammar is concerned with the units of sentences.
Angeli-Carter (1998) observed that grammar is essential to the teaching and learning of
languages and pointed out that one needs to grasp the grammar of the target language in order to
be able to speak and write it properly.
A survey of research shows that grammar can, in fact, be beneficial in terms of its effects
on the learner’s communication skills, either in their first language or in a modern foreign
language (Paribakht, 2004).
Movies are a part of visual literacy and “movies are an enjoyable source of entertainment
and language acquisition” (Ismaili, 2012).
The use of films in the language classroom can encourage and inspire a creative approach
that can have applications across the curriculum (Chan & Herrero, 2010).
Using the same pattern, movies help the progress of the writing skill of the learner and
give enticing and motivating clues to accompany audio or written inputs, in that way they help
understanding and producing of second language input/output (Ismaili, 2012).
The slide in the Filipinos competence and proficiency in English distressingly comes at a
time when the world is effectively adopting English as a global language (San Miguel, 2006).

III. Design
Topic:
English Grammar (Watching English Movies in Improving Students’
Grammar Awareness and English Proficiency)
Goals:
The main purpose of this proposal is to:
Enable students to carry out their communication purposes/skills.
Improve speaking, reading, and writing skills of students.
Appreciate English language.
Make students globally competitive in the near future.
Prepare students in achieving personal and professional growth.
Increase the chances of getting a good job in their future work field.
Time Allotment:
1 hour and 30 minutes (Answering activities to monitor their improvement within 40 hours in 10
months).
Desired Results:
It is to appreciate English movies and use it as one of the tools in learning
the language. There are several researches that will support my proposal on how
English movies helps learners to improve their English proficiency. Students are
expected to speak English gradually, writing essays with proper usage of parts of
speech to monitor their development and read words with right pronunciation. All
in all, these desired results will contribute in helping students to become globally
competitive that requires global competencies.
Curriculum Implementation:
Starting a curriculum in terms of Watching English movies in improving students
grammar awareness and English Proficiency will start by creating a plan or an outline to
successfully achieve the desired outcomes, this paper is an example of an outline which includes
the content, such as why students should learn English language? and how English movies helps
students to broaden their understanding in a specific language? What English language carries in
the development of our learners? how would this proposal be possible? Of course, by researching
ideas first to support your propose guide on how English movies affects students’ academic
progress. This proposal primarily seeks time and attention in English Department for them to
make an initial and succeeding action, in line with this, there should be a survey and agreement
to parents, students, school administrators, as well as the school heads and principal before
executing the proposal. Teachers should find movies that are related in the topic that improves
students analytical skills, speaking and communication skills, vocabularies, pronunciation, and
parts of speech to monitor and enhance students learning focusing on the essential contribution
of English movies.
Assessment/Evaluation
There should be an assessment and evaluation to know how the curriculum contributed in
the academic performance and academic progress of the students. It will be effective if the
desired goals have achieved particularly in students’ analytical skills, speaking and
communication skills, vocabularies, pronunciation, and uses parts of speech correctly. After
watching video film that has connection in the desired outcomes, there will be a discussion to
deepen and expand learner’s knowledge, therefore, there will be an activity to improve students
English proficiency as well that was mentioned above. Students will have 2 hours in watching
movies followed by the 1 and a half hour the next period for the assessment of students learnings
using printed test sheets. To successfully evaluate students learnings, there will be an item
analysis to know specific questions where students faced some difficulties, so the teacher should
know where s/he will put his/her focus on or how many students learned in watching English
movies.

Summary:
This proposal focuses more on grammar awareness and English proficiency of students
that became an issue or concern that should be address by means of watching English movies in
the improvement of students academic progress. There are related literature presented to support
and serves as evidence in addressing students problem in terms of English language.
Due to this Curriculum Guide Proposal, there are several expected outcomes or goals after
students watched English movies within 80 hours of their school time. These are the following:
to enable students to carry out their communication purposes/skills, it is to Improve students.
speaking, reading, and writing skills, for them to appreciate English language, to make students
globally competitive in the near future, it is to prepare students in achieving personal and
professional growth and lastly, to increase the chances of getting a good job in their future work
field.
With this new proposal which is watching English movies in improving students grammar
awareness and English proficiency, students will have new experience in doing their lessons by
means of watching films. In addition, this new guide will help students in developing their
speaking g communication skills that are vital in becoming globally competitive. This is not just
a usual learning in English such as stories which students’ learnings will just be depended on
books and questions to be answered.
As a conclusion, this will be beneficial among all students not just within the school terms,
but in this way, students are being prepared in making themselves open as a well-developed
individual in using English language with grammatically correct sentences that could help in
applying a good job as written in the introduction with a support of related literature.
