FRENZELIT fabric expansion joints are custom-made quality products and require careful treatment.

Attention:
We want to point out that it is not possible to reflect all procedures exactly with these instructions
for installation. The installation has to be made by FRENZELIT-supervisor, who would also join the
fabric layers. We cannot take over liability for any damages which may have caused by faulty
installation without skilled personnel.

1.0 Transport

1.1 FRENZELIT expansion joints should be transported only in the original packing in which they are
supplied.

1.2 The packing is designed to last and to protect the shape of the expansion joint in the long term.

1.3 You are advised not to remove the packing until the expansion joints have reached the place of
installation.

1.4 After removing the packing, carefully examine the expansion joints for any damage that may have
occurred during shipping.

NEVER INSTALL DAMAGED COMPONENTS !!!

2.0 Storage

2.1 FRENZELIT expansion joints can be stored at temperatures down to -5° Celsius. However, before
handling or installation, the expansion joints should be warmed up to temperatures of +10°C to 20°
Celsius because the flexibility of the sealing film is very low at temperatures of less than +10°
Celsius. In principle, storage shall be accomplished in dry bays.

2.2 Heavy objects should not be stored on top of expansion joints and they must be kept away from
sharp edged objects.

2.3 Expansion joints should be stored spread out in a manner approximating to the installed position.

3.0 General notes

3.1 Depending on the composition of the material and the profiles used, FRENZELIT expansion joints
vary in lateral and longitudinal flexibility.
They must not be stretched beyond their total height.
It is therefore necessary to check the dimension of the ductwork before installation to guarantee
that they conform to specifications. This criteria should also be checked after putting into operation.

3.2 All expansion joints must be handled carefully at all times. Large deformations and folds are to be
avoided, especially at low temperatures. Pulling or rubbing over sharp edges and corners of
structural steelwork as well as stretching invariably leads to damage of the fabric and seals.

3.3 Duct flanges and clamping-bars flanges must be cleaned and their surfaces must be flat. The
clamping-bar flange facing the expansion joint should be rounded on the inner edge. If that is not
the case, then at least the inner edge should be chamfered. To protect the outer layer, the
assembly bolts must be installed with their bolt head facing the outer layer.

3.4 Definitely avoid welding near the expansion joints. If it cannot be avoid, make sure to take sufficient
precautionary measures to prevent damage to the expansion joints by using welding blankets.

3.5 FRENZELIT expansion joints are not to be surrounded by any insulation except for the following
case:
The medium temperature in the expansion joint never gets higher than the temperature resistance
of the expansion joint material.
The ambient temperature near the expansion joint should not exceed 50°C - 60°C.
When the joints will be covered with an enclosure, the construction must guarantee air circulation
to maintain lower temperatures on the outside layer of the joint (see sketch).

4.0 Installation of expansion joint

To avoid any damage, the expansion joint should only be installed after installation of the ductwork.

Step by step description:

Check and make sure that the existing duct and frame work dimension are according the drawings
and technical specifications.

2. Step:

After lifting the expansion carefully to the installation gap start the installation with the drilled
expansion joint side and on the top side of the duct. Begin in the corners (see marking of the
expansion joint corners). Mount the clamping-bars with the bolting (screws, nut and washer) together
with the expansion joint to the duct flange tighten them by hand! Continue this procedure on the
whole circumference till the expansion joint assembly is fixed on the top side.

3. Step:

The expansion joints side which are not drilled (bottom duct side), has to be clamped with the help
of clamping bars and screw clamps to the duct flange. Drill the expansion joint in the clamping area
(use a drilling machine). Use the punched duct-flange and clamping bars as bolt hole pattern. Make
sure, that the screw clamps are fixed tight, to avoid extraction of the fabric.

4. Step:

Screw the clamping-bars with the bolting (screws, nut and washer) together with the expansion
joint to the duct flange tighten them by hand! Continue this procedure on the whole circumference
till the expansion joint assembly is fixed on the bottom side.

Stepwise tighten bolts with a torque of 100 Nm on both flanges (TOP and BOTTOM).
For installing and joining of open expansion joints see sketches and instructions enclosed (page 8).

5.0 Maintenance

5.1 During operation make sure to remove dust or sand deposits from the expansion joints to avoid
mechanical or thermal damage.
To detect damage caused by the installation of other parts, the expansion joints should be
inspected visual from the outside after starting operation.

5.2 After starting operation and/or at routine inspections, all bolts must be examined and, if necessary,
they should be re-torqued several times with 100Nm (M16) or 70Nm (M12). Do not forget to check
for damage or possible leakages visible from outside.

5.3 If possible, check the inside of the expansion joints during a shut-down period.

1. The Quality and Test Regulations for Fabric Expansion Joints mention in Item 2.1.4 and in
3.1.4 "Tightness" that expansion joints should be tight in accordance with the latest edition of
the RAL TI-005 "Tightness test of fabric expansion joints with foam building liquid”.

2. The bubble method acc. to RAL-TI-005 is a qualitative method. It serves for finding and
proving an individual leakage.

3. In the RAL TI-005 statements are made regarding the sensitivity of test methods, namely
measured as a PV product for characterising an amount of gas.
3.1 The sensitivity of the bubble method to furnish proof is stated to be
L = 10-2 bis 10-4 mbar.l.s-1
This indication refers to an individual leakage and cannot therefore be transferred to the
integral leakage rate of an expansion joint.

4. Tightness is proved in a test unit by means of a foaming liquid (nekal) at room


temperature.
4.1 In conformance with the Quality and Test Regulations RAL-GZ 719, Item "2.2.6
Tightness", no bubbles may appear in the bellows area at a test pressure, which has to be
1½ times of the nominal pressure, but at least to 5000 Pa.
4.2 As a complement to the Quality and Test Regulations RAL-GZ 719, Item "2.2.6
Tightness", the occurrence of a limited number of foam bubbles in the clamping area and
joint area of the bellows is however permitted, if client’s specifications do not provide to the
contrary.

5. For convenience the formation of bubbles is judged on either clamping side for a specific
circumferential length (e.g. 1 m).
5.1 The diameter and number of bubbles formed in a specific period of time may be used as
a reference for evaluating the leakage rate.
5.2 A spherical foam bubble of 13.66 mm diameter has a volume of approx. 1 cm3. 100
bubbles of 2.94 mm each, or 10,000 bubbles of 0.63 mm each, or 1,000,000 bubbles of 0.14
mm diameter each, have an identical volume.
5.3 According to the structure, leakages in the range of some L.min-1.m-1 are admissible.

6. The tightness may be proved on a mutually agreed design specimen and/or on site, on the
installed original.

1. Following guidelines for bolted connections have to be respected to achieve flue gas
tightness acc. to TI-002 or nekal tightness acc. to TI-003. Attention: The bolt torques are not
valid for clamp bands, straps and external clamps.

2. Bolting torque
To control the setting of the different expansion joint materials, the conditions and instruct-
tions of the manufacturer regarding the retorque of the bolting or the use of spring washers
need to be observed. Guideline valid for ambient temperature acc. to the following chart.

The stiffness of the duct flange should be at least the same as the stiffness of the clamp bar / back-up bar

4. Bolting material of galvanized quality 5.6 and 8.8 should be preferred for expansion joint
fixation.

5. The combination of stainless steel bolting material and fabric expansion joint material is in
some extend problematic. This material should be avoided if possible.

6. High temperature resistant bolts should only be used for temperatures higher than 300°C
(570°F) at the bolt.

Non-metallic expansion joints are high quality products which need to be handled with care.

1. Storage

The condition and the duration of storage do have an influence on the condition of the
expansion joint.

„ remain expansion joints in original packing


„ expansion joints need to be stored at dry places, humid condition have to be avoided
„ protect expansion joints from direct weather influence e.g. sunlight, rain a.s.o.
„ if possible store expansion joints inside of buildings
„ recommended temperature for storage is between + 10°C to + 20°C
„ do not store other equipment on top of the expansion joints
„ ozone penetration, chemical influence and corrosive environmental conditions have to be
avoided for storage longer than 6 month

1.1 Short time storage before installation

Please respect following additional conditions:

„ storage of expansion joints in weather proof containments, e.g. oversea containers


„ during the outside short time storage the expansion joints have to be covered with a
weather proof canvas cover and need to be protected against humidity from the ground
„ at temperatures below + 5°C expansion joints do have an increased sensibility against
bending. Therefore warm expansion joint up to + 10°C before handling.

2. Packing

„ without further requirements from the client, non-metallic expansion joints will be packed in
standard stabile cardboard boxes or cardboards on pallets which allow removal with a fork
lifter.
„ special demands have to be settled with the supplier:

• boxes, crates
• seaworthy packing
• oversea-container
• special packing

all above mentioned packing are designed for handling with fork lifters or cranes

ƒ the packing provides the best protection for the expansion joints and should be removed
first at the actual installation location before starting the installation work.
ƒ long term storage may require a special packing and needs to be discussed with the
supplier

3. Transport

„ non-metallic expansion joints are packed according to their size, the way of transport, the
duration of transport, the duration of storage and the final shipping destination. Damages
should not occur during regular transportation.

„ cardboards on pallets, wooden boxes and containers are designed/suitable for fork lifters
and crane-handling.

„ cardboards on pallets must not be stored on top of each other. The maximum load
capacity has to be respected!

„ unpacked expansion joints have to be moved extreme carefully. Please note following
items:

• unpacked expansion joints need to be placed on a safe base (e.g. pallet) and need to
be temporary protected during transport by a crane or a fork lifter
− the attachment points for the lifting equipment have to be on the base (pallet)
− according to the weight of the joints use always several persons for carrying

• do not drag expansion joints along the ground or across edges

• respect decreased bending-properties at low temperatures

Please contact the supplier in any case if damages have been noticed at the packing or
during transport and storage.

Never install damaged components!

In general never cover or insulate non-metallic expansion joints at the outside.


In any case contact supplier for final approval if enclosures or outside insulation will be
installed.
The thermal influence of adjacent elements has to be respected.
According to the type of expansion joint, following designs are possible:

1. Interface duct insulation


Interface insulation is unconditionally required in case of outside insulated pipes and ducts.
Neither the expansion joint nor the fixation elements must not be insulated in order to provide
an unobstructed thermal convection.

Please note following issues when installing covers for example as acoustic insulation,
weather shrouds or covers for shock protection:
- Movements of the expansion joint must not be restricted
- Grant sufficient airflow at entire circumference
- Ensure air circulation with low temperature ambient
- Heat trapping and thermal bridges must be avoided
Deformations of the expansion joint, especially arches being formed during operation, have
be respected.

3. External insulation
Contact the supplier in any case if the expansion joint shall be externally insulated.
The maximum operation temperature of externally insulated expansion joints shall not be
higher than the maximum allowed operation temperature for the material of the make-up
which has the lowest thermal resistance.
External insulation applications for temperatures above 260 °C require a serious technical
design.

FRENZELIT fabric expansion joints are custom-made quality products and require careful
treatment during handling, installation, commissioning and operation.

1.0 Transport

1.1 FRENZELIT expansion joints should be transported only in the original packing in
which they have been supplied.

1.2 The packing is designed to last and to protect the shape of the expansion joint for
the storage during the construction phase.

1.3 You are advised not to remove the packing until the expansion joints have reached
the final installation location.

1.4 After removing the packing, carefully examine the expansion joints for any damage
that may have occurred during shipping.

NEVER INSTALL DAMAGED COMPONENTS !!!

2.0 Storage

2.1 FRENZELIT expansion joints can be stored at temperatures down to -5° Celsius.
However, before handling or installation, the expansion joints should be warmed
up to temperatures of +10°C to 20° Celsius because the flexibility of the sealing
film is very low at temperatures of less than +10° Celsius. In principle, storage shall
be accomplished in dry bays.
2.2 Heavy objects should not be stored on top of expansion joints and they must be
kept away from sharp edged objects.

2.3 Expansion joints should be stored spread out in a manner approximately to the
installed position.

3.0 General notes

3.1 Depending on the material make up and the profiles used, FRENZELIT expansion
joints vary in lateral and longitudinal flexibility.
They must not be stretched beyond their total height.
It is therefore necessary to check the measurements of the ductwork before
installation to guarantee that they conform to specifications. These criteria should
also be checked after putting into commission.

3.2 All expansion joints must be handled carefully at all times. Large deformations and
folds have to be avoided, especially at low temperatures. Pulling or rubbing over
sharp edges and corners of structural steelwork as well as overstretching leads to
damage of the fabric and seals.

3.3 Fixed flanges and back-up bars must be cleaned and their surfaces must be flat.
The back up bars facing the expansion joint should be rounded on the inner edge.
If that is not the case, then at least the inner edge should be chamfered. To protect
the outer layer, the assembly bolts must be installed with their bolt head facing the
outer layer.

3.4 Definitely avoid welding close to the expansion joints. If welding cannot be
avoided, make sure to take sufficient precautionary measures to prevent damage
to the expansion joints by using welding blankets.

4.0 Installation of expansion joint

4.1 To avoid any damages, the expansion joint should be installed after the erection
and installation of the ductwork. On the eve of installation the installation condition
and the positional tolerance of both connections flanges have to be checked
according to RAL TI 013.

4.2 The punching of unpunched expansion joints is carried out before installation or
transport to the actual installation point and depends on the dimensions. The
compliance of the dimensions of the expansion joint, the duct- and lapped stub end
flanges have to be checked before punching again. The hole-pattern of the duct-/
lapped stub end flanges has to be conveyed on the flanges of the expansion joint.
For this the expansion joint has to be unfurled completely and to be brought into its
original manufactured form on a flat and clean surface. At angled expansion joints
all four edges have to be adjusted rectangularly. A bedding layer from fabric and
plastic film has to be provided to avoid mechanical damages of the inner sealing-
film. In no case it is allowed to enter or damage the expansion joint mechanically.
This would lead to leakage after installation!!
Generally the adequate lapped stub end flanges are fitted and adjusted flushly with
the outer expansion joint flange-edge. Installation drawings have to be considered
if applicable. After that the hole pattern has to be conveyed on the fabric
reinforcement of the expansion joint flanges with a marking pencil. There is also
the possibility to prepare a pattern of paperboard of the duct-punching to convey
the hole pattern with it. For the actual punching a hollow punch with adequate
diameter or with the diameter specified on the installation drawings is used. A log
of wood (hardwood) has to be put under to avoid damages of the hollow punch and
the expansion joint. Only after complete punching the expansion joint will be
brought to the actual installation point.

4.3.1 Expansion joints with parted lapped stub end flanges


The expansion joint has to be positioned between the flanges carefully and fixed
with several bolts temporarily. The execution of the bolting has to be learned from
the installation drawings. Before the actual bolting a PTFE-sealing-tape (normally
included in consignment from Frenzelit) has to be glued on both sides of the duct
flange. For this see point 4.4.

Position parts of lapped stub end flanges (rounded/chamfered inner edge has to
show to the expansion joint bellow and to the fabric flange; at installation of spare
parts please note marking on lapped stub end flanges), assemble bolting according
to installation drawing and bolt manually the parted lapped stub end flange at
circumference. The bolts for the temporarily fixing have to be removed compulsory.
After assembling all bolts on both flanges they have to be pulled equally at whole
circumference with a torque of 120Nm (M20), 100Nm (M16), or rather 70Nm
(M12).

The distance between the parts of two lapped stub end flanges should not exceed
3 mm. If necessary galvanized plates or plates from stainless steel (appr.
40x40x1mm) have to be putted under to guarantee leak-tightness (see sketch).

4.3.2 Expansion joint with one piece lapped stub end flanges
At expansion joints with one piece lapped stub end flanges (endless ring or frame)
the lapped stub end flanges are positioned over the attached fabric flanges onto the
bellow area of the expansion joint. The fabric flanges can be deformed carefully for
this. Pay attention to the exact positioning and orientation (dimensions,
rounded/chamfered inner edge has to show to the expansion joint bellow and to the
fabric flange).

The assembly of the bolting has to be learned from the installation drawing. Before
the actual bolting a PTFE-sealing-tape (normally included in consignment from
Frenzelit) has to be glued on both sides of the duct flange. For this see point 4.4.

Put the expansion joint with mounted lapped stub end flange carefully into the gap
between the duct flanges. For this the expansion joint has to be pressed to avoid
any contact with the duct flanges and the glued on PTFE-gasket.
Lapped stub end flanges, expansion joint flanges and duct flange has to be
adjusted in correlation. The bolts has to be assembled according to drawing and
tightened manually. After assembling all bolts on both flanges have to be pulled
equally at the whole circumference with a torque of 120Nm (M20), 100Nm (M16),
or rather 70Nm (M12).

4.4 Insertion and gluing of the PTFE sealing tape on the duct flange:
The PTFE sealing tape is self-adhesive on one side and has to be glued onto the
duct flange in a distance of appr. 10 mm from the inner flange edge of the
expansion joint flange. On the splice areas a crosswise overlap on both ends has
be to carried out.

4.5 Round expansion joints with big diameters can be delivered with a so-called flip-
flange design. This design takes up following installation steps:

4.5.1 Position one-piece lapped stub end flanges according to sketch over the delivered
tube-designe expansion joint. Put expansion joint with glued on or loose delivered
clamping reinforcement lateral over, so that the punching is conform with the
punching of the lapped stub end flange. Binders for example can be used as
assembling aid.

4.5.2 Position the expansion joint carefully between the duct flanges and bolt it down
gradually according to sketch at circumference manually.

4.5.3 The optionally used zip tie have to be cut off and be pulled outside. The
PTFE sealing tape must not be damaged. After that the assembly of the bolts
and the final assembly according to point 4.3.2 can be carried out.

5.0 Maintenance

5.1 During operating make sure to remove any dust or sand accumulation from the
expansion joints to avoid mechanical or thermal damages.
To detect any damages caused by the installation of other parts, the expansion
joints should be inspected from the outside after start up.

5.2 After the start up and/or at routine inspections, all bolts must be examined and, if
necessary, they should be retorqued with 120Nm (M20), 100 Nm (M16) and 70Nm
(M12).
Do not forget to make a visible check for damages or leaks from the outside.

5.3 If possible, check the inside of the expansion joints during a shut down period.

Note that it is not possible to reflect all procedures in detail. The installation has to be carried
out normally by a FRENZELIT-Supervisor, who also makes the connection between the fabric-
layers.
FRENZELIT will reject liability for damages caused by faulty installation carried out by
non trained personal.
