Go Wild Lesson Plan

Teacher: Ms. Sedgwick


Grade: 1st grade
Content Area: ELA/Reading/Comprehension

1. Content and Standards: Main Idea and Details. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.1 Ask and
answer questions about key details in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.1.2 Identify the
main topic and retell key details of a text.

2. Prerequisites: Students should be able to read and comprehend a short story.


Students should be able to pick out key details in a story. Students should be able to
locate/identify the beginning, middle and end

3. Essential Questions: What is the main idea of our story?

4. Materials and Equipment: Main Idea anchor chart, main idea puzzle game, reading
book, graphic organizer, dry erase marker

5. Instructional Objective*: Students will be able to accurately describe the main idea of
Go Wild! and support the main idea with details from the story.

6. Instructional Procedures:
Before: Begin the lesson by activating prior knowledge. Does anyone remember the
story we read last week? What did we find out about the story? Allow time for some
answers. Present the main idea anchor chart to help jog students’ memories. Inform
students what we will be doing today. First, we are going to do some main
idea/detail practice. Then we are going to read the story. Next, we will use our skills
to find the main idea together, Finally you guys will come up with some toppings for
your story main idea pizza! Play fun main idea rap song.

During: Review anchor chart with the class. What is the main idea? How do we find
it? What do we need to do? Can we have just a plain pizza (main idea). No way! We
need details to help our main idea taste/be really good! Play the main idea puzzle
game. Each student will get a picture on their desk that correlates to a main idea mat
on the board. Then, they will have to tape their picture on the correct main idea mat.
Go through a few of the completed mats and show the children how important it is
for our details to “match” or go with our main idea. Try switching some of the
pictures to make your point. Read the story aloud with the class. When the story is
over, work together as a class to figure out the main idea of the story. Write the
main idea in big letters on the board!

After: Pass out graphic organizer. Explain to students that their ticket out will be to
complete the graphic organizer with three details that go with our main idea. Have
students turn to the page where their first detail will be. Students will work on the
graphic organizer individually while teachers walk around and observe the
classroom. When finished, bring the class together to conclude our lesson and
explain how we will use our skills for tomorrow/Friday’s fun project.

7. Assessment: The graphic organizer will be the assessment for this lesson. Students
should be able to fill in the main idea and provide three details to go with the main
idea.

8. Differentiated Instruction: Students who need support will be able to look at the
anchor chart on the board and will have the option to draw their details instead of
writing them. Students who need enrichment will be able to write the page where the
textual evidence is that supports their details.
