This document provides examples of calculating measures of central tendency - mean, median, and mode - for different data sets of student quiz scores. For the first data set of 13 student scores ranging from 1 to 19, it calculates: - The mean is 9.62 - The median is 11 - The modes are 11 and 2 For the second data set when those same 13 students retook the quiz, it calculates: - The mean is also 9.62 - The median is 10 - The mode is 10 For the third data set of 8 scores ranging from 30 to 1000, it calculates: - The mean is 100 - The median is 120 - The

Practice Sheet 4-2 Measures of Central Tendency

1. A class of 13 students takes a 20-item quiz on Science 101. Their scores were as follows: 11,
11, 13, 14, 15, 18, 19, 9, 6, 4, 1, 2, 2.
a.
Mean = 11+11+13+14+15+18+19+9+6+4+1+2+2
13
Mean =9.615389 or 9.62
b.
1, 2, 2,4,6,9,11,11,13,14,15,18,19
Median = 11
c.
Mode= 11 and 2

2. A day after, the of 13 students mentioned in problem 1 takes the same test a second time. This
time their scores were: 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 13, 19, 9, 9, 8, 1, 7, 8.
a.
Mean= 10+10+10+10+11+13+19+9+9+8+1+7+8
13
Mean= 9.615384 or 9.62
b.
Median= 1,7,8,8,9,9,10,10,10,10,11,13,19
Median= 10
c.
Mode= 10
d. No there is no difference in the performance because the average or the mean are still the same
3. For the set of scores: 1000, 50, 120, 170, 120, 90, 30, 120.
a.
Mean= 50+120+170+120+90+30+120
7
Mean= 100
b.
Median= 30,50,90,120,120,120,170,1000
Median= 120
c. Mode= 120
d. Mean is the most appropriate measure of central tendency because that includes all the values in
the data set for its calculation.
