THESIS STATEMENT:
Social media users who love to post their daily life activities to attract and communicate with others, believe
that their personal information is protected. However, the amount of personal information being shared on
social media networks expose the users to threats such as stalkers and sexual offenders.
In January 2019, the number of daily active Instagram users who post and share stories reached 500
million and more than 2.4 billion users on Facebook (Statista, 2020). Nowadays, people averagely use
social media for about 3 hours to watch each feed and activity without paying attention to what kind of
personal information they post or who is watching them and the repercussion of doing so. Experts found that
most social media users who post and share their daily life and activity with friends to grow their network
didn’t even know that their activities would not cause them harm. However, the amount of personal
information being shared on social media networks actually exposes every user to threats such as sexual
offenders may lead to repercussions for society.
Opposing views claim that social media is the best way to stay connected and share moments and
information with friends. As of the Covid-19 pandemic, social media truly helped everyone to stay
connected. This is because social media networks allow users to share daily activities and information with
ease anytime and anywhere they desire. The participant rates of social networking among certain
demographics and the amount and type of information participants freely reveal are staggering. Despite the
argument, information shared on social media enables anyone to mistreat the information and create an
issue that would lead to harassment. The tremendous amount of personal information and whereabouts
posted on social networking sites makes the user an easy victim of stalking or identification theft without
even being aware of the risk. Gross (2005) stated that Social engineering uses psychological manipulation
to trick users into making security mistakes such as providing critical information that is easily available on
the internet or social networking which expose themselves to the risk of identity theft. While privacy may be
at risk on social networking sites, information is willingly provided.
Another argument put forward by the opposition concerning social media is that it allows users to
expand their networks by communicating and connecting with new friends anywhere. Social media
empowered users to develop a voice of advocacy. The ability to see who follows who and the reactions from
the posts reinforces a sense of belonging. Because of the accessibility that social networks offer, it allows
everyone to connect with new people anywhere in the world and easily expand their networks. On the other
hand, social media allows offenders and perpetrators to lurk anonymously over social media with bad
intentions to find their victims, such as young child making them their target of disgusting lust. From just
creating a fake social account, sex offender are able to kidnap, rape and murdered a teen (Bosker, 2017 ).
In social networks, not everyone is presenting themselves as they are in the real world. Therefore, the
possibility of someone using fake information or a fake account to deceive and manipulate other users is
extremely high.
In conclusion, social media is a part of individual life when users spend most of their time checking
others and share stories. However, sharing such a piece of information reveals them to various threats, such
as being stalked by sexual abusers. This is because social media users are convinced that their information
is protected and secured. Therefore they keep sharing their daily activities to attract others and
communicate with each other. To prevent these threats, users must control the amount of information they
share and not trust other users completely. This is because they might be a user that is hiding behind a fake
identity. By not taking great measures to guards their information on social media will ultimately expose
themselves to various threats which may bring repercussion to their life.
