Fundamental components of graphic design principles are incorporated with problem definition to
provide students with experiences in the ideation, research, execution and presentation of projects.
Students will develop an understanding of the elements and principles of graphic design and how to use
color and form to visualize ideas in a unique and compelling way.

Student Learning Objectives:

• Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Demonstrate fundamental understanding of vector- and pixel-based illustration software,


including text entry, illustration tools, working with layers, adjustment filters, color mixing,
document settings, and file export formats.

• Demonstrate understanding of the elements of design: line, shape, illusion of space, texture,
pattern, value, and color as applied to graphic design and digital formats

• Demonstrate understanding of the principles of design: unity, emphasis, focal point, scale,
proportion, balance, and rhythm as applied to graphic design and digital formats

• Demonstrate understanding of effective composition emphasizing an intentional arrangement of


elements and principles of design appropriate to context as applied to graphic design and
digital formats.

• Develop methods of problem solving.

• Demonstrate the use of style in a design solution.

• Demonstrate self-criticism and group critique participation.

• Demonstrate understanding of ideation, research, execution and presentation of projects.

• Demonstrate use of color and form to visualize ideas in an effective manner.

• Develop a portfolio representative of coursework.

COURSE INFORMATION

Attendance is mandatory. Students are required to stay for the full group meeting. Early departures will
be considered absences. If you walk in late, it is your responsibility to let the instructor to know that you
were late and not absent.

Any student needing accommodations due to a documented disability should notify the Center and
me for Disability Services (Parks Student Union Room 267, Across from Bookstore, (425) 388-9272) at

If you use our computer labs for this class, you should know…

No food or drink is permitted in the computer labs. Watch for signs posting each quarter’s lab hours. The
lab is available when no classes are in session in the lab. Please be courteous and honor lab hours.

If you need assistance with computers in the lab see the lab monitor. The job of the lab monitor
does not include helping you complete your assignment. If you have questions regarding your
assignments, schedule an appointment to see me outside of class for extra assistance.

You must use the equipment checkout room to check out camera equipment. Cameras must be
returned within 24-hours.

All work submitted in this class is expected to be your own. Tracing artwork or written work may
violate the owner’s copyright and is prohibited in this class. You will receive a failing grade in the class if
you submit the work of others—professionals or students—as your own.

All work submitted in this class is expected to be completed during this quarter. Unless stated
otherwise for a specific assignment, designs produced in other classes will not be accepted.

Using copyrighted photographs, clip art or other materials as part of your assignments Is allowed on a
limited “educational purposes only” basis and only when allowed by the instructor.

Follow the instructions provided for each class assignment and exercise. Failure to do so will result
in a deduction in your grade for each assignment. If you are unclear about the instructions for an
assignment, please address the issue in class or contact me during office hours.

These deadlines, like any other in the real world, are absolute. Late assignments will automatically
receive a reduced grade unless an extension is requested and granted in advance of the due date.

The following factors may prove to be essential for your success in this class.

• Work in advance of deadlines;

• Ask questions and seek feedback both in and out of class;

• Take advantage of open lab time to work;

• Participate actively in class discussions;

• Complete all assigned readings;

• Pay close attention during class;

• Avoid missing class;

• Avoid trying to complete assignments too quickly;

• Be open to trying different styles and approaches.

It is expected that your participation will be largely based on your personal interests and goals as they
relate to your career goals in design.

More importantly It is the goal of this class to provide specific technical skills and perspective on
multimedia, web site design, and to help you become a better designer from that experience.

A,A- Excellent quality and intellectual initiative

B+,B,B-   High quality and intellectual initiative

C+,C,C-   Acceptable quality; satisfactory achievement

D    Deficient quality; passing

E    Failure to meet minimum requirements; not passing

P    Pass (with pass/no pass grading)

NP    No Pass (with pass/no pass grading)

I    Incomplete

W    Withdrawal
