Active vs passive
Active sentence
Fleming discovered penicillin in 1950
(subject) (active verb) (object)
Passive sentence

The passive verb is formed by putting the verb to be into the same
tense as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active
verb
Discovered by → was discovered
(active verb) (be + past participle of active verb)
The object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb (penicilin)
The subject of an active verb becomes the agent of the passive verb (Fleming)
The agent can be ommited if not wanted
Penicilin was discovered in 1950

“by”
