A Computer System is more than just a Computer. It is a combination of “components working
together to perform a specific task”.

A. Hardware is the physical, touchable, electronic, and mechanical components of a computer system.

❖ Main hardware components of a computer system

1. System Unit- is the part of the computer that houses the

primary devices that perform operations and produce result for complex
computations. It consists of the following internal components; Motherboard,
Microprocessor, Memory Chips, Buses, Ports, Expansion Slots, and Cards.

While the system case is known as computer chassis. it houses all the parts of
the system unit and the main purpose of it is to protect your computer’s internal
components.

circuit board that allows other computer parts to be connected to one
another.
It also contains all the components and circuits which run the computer.
https://tse4.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.dND1VZ--P_MBD4Kl8w344QAAAA&pid=Api&P=0&w=248&h=165

3. CPU (Central Processing Unit)- or microprocessor is known as the “brain” of

a computer system. It performs all the instructions and calculations that are needed
and manages the flow of information through a computer.
https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.zZPofua3btgk

3. Primary storage (internal storage, main memory, or memory) is the working

storage space of the computer that contains data, processing instructions and
processed data (information) waiting for secondary storage. There are two types
of memory: ROM (Read Only Memory) ROM and RAM (Random Access
Memory).

RAM is a type of volatile memory. Data in not permanently written. When you power off
your computer the data stored in RAM is deleted.

ROM is a type of non- volatile memory. Data in ROM is permanently written and is not
erased when you power off your computer.

Aironet2021
4. Expansion Bus- A bus is a data pathway between multiple components
of the hardware within or outside of a device. It not only connects the CPU parts
to each other but also connects the CPU to other essential hardware.

There are several different types of expansion buses with diverse

features, such as:
1. >Industry Standard Architecture (ISA)
2. Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP)
3. Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI)

5. Adapters/Expansion Cards – It referred to as an add-adapter, or

card, an expansion card is a printed circuit on card, expansion board,
internal card, interface board that fits into an expansion bus/slot on a desktop
computer.

An expansion card is used to give a computer additional capabilities and

often used to permit upgrading to a new different hardware. These are Sound Card, Video
Card, Network Interface Card (NIC) and Modem (Modular-Demodulator)

6. Power Supply Unit (PSU)- Installed next to the motherboard, in the back
corner of the PC case. It converts 120v AC (standard house power) to DC voltages
that other PC components use. It also provides the necessary power source
needed by the computer to work.
7. Hard Disk Drive (HDD)- A magnetic storage disk that is mounted inside the
computer is also known as hard drive. The hard drive acts as permanent data
storage. The hard disk is normal configured as the C: drive on a Windows
computer and includes the operating system and applications .

8. Pointing Devices- An input device used on the screen to move the pointer
(cursor). mouse, touch screen, light pen, and digitizer tablet.
Solid State Drive
(SSD) 9. Solid State Drive (SSD) – is a storage device that can be used internal or external
part, SSDs uses either IDE or SATA interface same as HDD but the main difference
between HDDs and SSDs that SDDs do not have mechanical moving parts such as
the disk platters inside HDDs.
10. Optical Disc Drive (ODD)- uses a laser light to read data from or write data to an
optical disc.

There are three types of optical disc

Compact Disk (CD)
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) an Blu-ray Disc (BD).

Aironet2021
❖ Input Devices - Accepts data and instructions from the user or from another computer system

Two types of Input devices

1. Keyboard Entry- Data is entered through a keyboard into the computer.
2. Direct Entry - A form of input that does not require data to be keyed by someone sitting at a
keyboard. Direct-entry devices create machine-readable data on paper, or magnetic media, or
feed it directly into the computer’s CPU

Three Categories of Direct Entry Devices

1. Pointing Devices- An input device used on the screen to move the pointer (cursor).
mouse, touch screen, light pen, and digitizer tablet.

2. Scanning Devices-A device capable of reading paper-printed text or diagrams and

converting the information into a form that the user can use. Examples are image scanner
and bar code reader.

3. Voice- Input Devices- Audio input devices also known as voice or speech recognition
systems that allow a user to send audio signals to a computer for processing, recording, or
executing commands. Audio input devices like microphones allow users to speak to the
machine to record a voice message or navigate applications.

❖ Output Devices- Any computer hardware component that shows results after the computer processes
the input data entered.

1. Computer Display Monitor- Using text and graphics, it displays information in

visual form. The part of the monitor showing the information is called the terminal for
screen or video display.
2.
2. LCD Projectors- Utilize two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid crystal solution
