Project Brief For CE2407 Part 1 AY2021-2022 Sem1

The document provides instructions for a mini project to solve the Lotka-Volterra equations using numerical methods. Students are asked to: 1) Write an introduction providing background on the Lotka-Volterra equations, their origins, applications, who derived them, and interesting related facts from trustworthy sources. 2) Use Euler's method and the Runge-Kutta Order 4 method in Excel to solve the equations, generating time-series and phase plots from t=0 to 30 with a step size of 0.0625. 3) Analyze and discuss the results to demonstrate understanding of the numerical solutions and implications. The Excel file with formulas must be included as an appendix.

Mini Project for CE2407 Part 1

Solving the Lotka-Volterra Equations

(a self-study project)

𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
= 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 − 𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏𝑏
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑
= 𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑 − 𝑐𝑐𝑐𝑐
𝑑𝑑𝑑𝑑

The task:
1. You are required to deliver a mini report outlining the following:
a. Introduction

• Provide the historical background of the Lotka-Volterra Equations, with

information such as how they originated, what do the equations described,
what were their initial applications, who derived these equations, some
background about their lives and if the Adriatic Sea and rabbit-proof fence in
Australia have anything to do with these equations.
• Provide as much interesting facts related to these equations – any references
used from the Internet needs to carefully compiled and listed in order of their
appearance in your write-up in a separate heading under Reference at the
end of your report. You should use trustworthy sources so it is incumbent
upon yourself to check their validity. You can provide various types of
references including YouTube videos to academic journal papers.
• Please pay attention to proper acknowledgment of your sources and do not
copy and paste chunks from the work of others as this amount to plagiarism
and will not be acceptable.
• You can include relevant images, diagrams, photos to support and clarify your
report. The report does not have to take the shape of a formal report, instead
you should make the report as interesting as possible to show your own
understanding of these equations.
b. Solving the Lotka-Volterra equations.

• You are required to use both Euler’s method and the Runge-Kutta Order 4
method and implemented in Microsoft EXCEL only to solve the equations
and present the results in two plots: (1) A time-series plot, i.e. how the
variable x and y vary with time, and (2) A phase plot, i.e. how x and y varies
with each other.
• In solving the equations, you are required to use a step size of 0.0625
integrating from time = 0 to 30. The recommended parameter values for a, b,
c, and d are 1.2, 0.6, 0.8, 0.3, respectively. Use x=2, and y=1 as initial
condition.
• In your EXCEL template, you may designed your layout of your table as you
wish, however, headings for each row and column used should be clearly
labelled. The cells where computations are generated should have their
formulae instead of mere numbers/values. This is in order that I can assess
whether you have implemented the numerical method correctly.

b. Conclusions.

• After presentation of the plots, you are required to provide some discussion
points to show your understanding of the results and implications of your
solution. You may compile this section from readings (Internet or journal
papers etc.), however, it should be written largely by yourself. The language
used need not be formal nor mathematical, but should reflect your
understanding of the analysis.
