H2B2!21!013-MW Scale TechEconProp.0

The document discusses H2B2's proposal for MW scale electrolyzers. It introduces four electrolyzer units - the EL100N, EL200N, EL400N, and EL600N - with hydrogen production capacities ranging from 100-600 Nm3/h and electrical power needs of 0.5-3.1 MW. The proposal notes that water treatment and hydrogen purification systems can be included, and that the output hydrogen pressure can be customized between 1-40 barg. The EL100N and EL200N models are highlighted for their 100-200 Nm3/h hydrogen production and 0.5-1 MW power consumption.

Synopsis of technology
Electrolysis

Through the electrolysis process, hydrogen is produced when applying

electrical current to water. By using renewable electricity (solar, wind,…),
it is considered clean hydrogen (H2).

+ → H2 + ½ O2
Electrolysis can produce 100% renewable hydrogen if combined with
renewable energy. It is a modular and scalable solution; no combustion
19/10/16
or gas emissions are involved in its production process.

The technology
Vertical integration

➢ There are four technology strands to the development of electrolysers

for hydrogen production:
➢ Stack technology (pilling or stacking of
membranes where the electrolysis takes
place); Giner ELX’s (Plug Power)
technological agreement
➢ Balance of Plant or BoP (on the basis of stack requirements, H2B2
designs and develops the equipment and auxiliary systems that allow
the stack to work, optimising the whole system efficiency)
➢ Integration technology (of the stack with the BoP, electrolyser with
other plant components such as storage and compression, and plant
19/10/16
with renewable energyfacilities)
➢ The expertise associated with the O&M

Proposed solution
MW scale electrolysers

❑ Four different electrolyser units are here analyzed, on the MW scale:

H2 production capacity Electrical power needs

EL100N 100 Nm3/h 215 kg/day 0.5 MW
EL200N 200 Nm3/h 430 kg/day 1.0 MW
EL400N 400 Nm3/h 860 kg/day 2.1 MW
EL600N 600 Nm3/h 1.290 kg/day 3.1 MW

❑ Incorporation to the electrolyser units of a water treatment system and

further purification to reach 99.999% hydrogen purity are optional.
❑ The output hydrogen pressure can be set up to the one required by the
customer, between 1 barg and 40 barg.

H2B2-21-013-MW Scale TechEconProp.0 17

Proposed solution
EL100N & EL200N

➢ EL100N and EL200N, with a hydrogen production of 100 and 200 Nm3/h and a
power consumption of 0.5 and 1 MW, respectively.
➢ The output hydrogen pressure can be set up to the one required by the
customer, between 1 barg and 40 barg.

Proposed solution
EL100N & EL200N: 3D

H2B2-21-013-MW Scale TechEconProp.0 19

Proposed solution
EL100N & 200N: Main Equipment (I/II)

➢ General electrical system: To supply electricity to all the instrumentation and

equipment. It is included an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which will supply
energy in case of an electrical failure.
➢ Control system: For monitoring and control of the electrolyser; to assure the entire
process functions correctly.
➢ Rectifier (AC/DC converter): Required electricity, which can originate from renewable
energy sources, is adapted before powering the stack.
➢ Stack: Electricity and water enter the system, splitting the water into hydrogen and
oxygen molecules.
➢ Oxygen separator: Produced oxygen is also a biphasic stream (O2 + H2O), where
oxygen in gas phase, steam, and traces of hydrogen, as well as a large amount of
liquid water, coexist. This equipment recovers the liquid water. The recovered water
is fed again to the stack in a closed loop.
➢ Pumps: There are two pumps in the electrolyser that impulse the water through the
circuit and give pressure where it is needed.

H2B2-21-013-MW Scale TechEconProp.0 20

Proposed solution
EL100N & EL200N: Main Equipment (II/II)

➢ Gas cooling system: To cool the hydrogen stream, improving the efficiency of
the complete system.
➢ Hydrogen separator: Produced hydrogen is a biphasic stream (H2 + H2O),
where steam, hydrogen, and traces of oxygen (in gas phase) and liquid water
coexist. Because of this, and due to the hydrogen purity required by
downstream applications, this equipment separates water from hydrogen.
➢ Water treatment plant (WTP): Which converts the ordinary water into pure
water (2+ type, required for the process). The Water Treatment Plant is only
included if deionized water (Conductivity < 0.1 µS/cm, TOC < 30 ppb) is not
available. WTP is included as an option.
➢ Purification system: Installed at the outlet of the hydrogen separator,
comprising a dryer (to trap humidity) and a deoxo (a catalytic recombiner to
collect the oxygen), in line with cathode outlet of the stack. Purification
system is only included if the hydrogen purity needed is higher than 99.9%.
Purification system is included as an option.

Proposed solution
Maintenance

❑ H2B2 will provide to the end user, together with the equipment, an operation and
maintenance (O&M) manual, that describes how the system should be operated and the
necessary tasks for its maintenance.

❑ In addition, H2B2 can provide training to the end user personnel, so that they acquire the
necessary knowledge to be able to take charge of the O&M of the hydrogen plant.

❑ During the warranty period, the preventive maintenance will have to be contracted to H2B2
to ensure the correct functioning of the plant during such a period.

❑ Additionally, within preventive maintenance, it is necessary to consider the replacement of

the stack that has a lifetime of 80,000 operating hours (10 years approximately, depending
on the way it will be operated, and customer maintenance practices).

❑ Regarding the corrective maintenance during the warranty period (assuming that the
customer has contracted the preventive maintenance to H2B2), the responsibility will fall on
H2B2 if the client has followed the instructions included in the O&M manual.
