Match background
Benfica are aiming to beat Barcelona for the first time in 60 years as the teams meet in Lisbon in the second round of
Group E fixtures.
• While Benfica took a point back to Portugal from their opening game at Dynamo Kyiv thanks to a 0-0 draw,
Barcelona lost 3-0 against Bayern München at the Camp Nou, making it three successive home European defeats for
the first time in their history.
Previous meetings
• The teams last crossed paths in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League group stage, goals from Alexis Sánchez and
Cesc Fàbregas earning Barcelona a 2-0 win in Lisbon on Matchday 2. The Camp Nou return on Matchday 6 finished
goalless, with Barcelona first in the section and Benfica third.
• That was the first season in which the winners between Barcelona and Benfica did not go on to lift the European
Cup.
• In the clubs' first meeting, Bela Guttmann's Benfica beating Barça 3-2 in the 1961 final in Berne. Although Sándor
Kocsis (21) put the Blaugrana ahead, Benfica hit back through José Águas (31) an Antoni Ramallets own goal (32)
and Mário Coluna (55) before Zoltán Czibor's strike (75).
• Barcelona secured their place in the 1992 final with a 2-1 win against Sven-Göran Eriksson's Benfica in the
concluding round of matches in the inaugural group stage on 15 April 1992. Hristo Stoichkov (12) and José María
Bakero (23) scored for Johan Cruyff's side, with Brito (27) replying. The clubs had drawn 0-0 in Lisbon on 11
December 1991. Benfica finished third in the group while Barcelona went on to win their first European Cup at
Sampdoria's expense.
• Barcelona's second European Cup triumph followed a quarter-final defeat of a Benfica team led by current Barça
coach Ronald Koeman in 2005/06. Again the sides drew 0-0 in Lisbon, before Ronaldinho (19) and Samuel Eto'o (89)
earned Frank Rijkaard's men a semi-final berth.
Form guide
Benfica
• Third in the Portuguese Liga in 2020/21, nine points adrift of champions Sporting CP, the most recent of Benfica's 15
UEFA Champions League group stage campaigns came in 2019/20 – their tenth in succession.
• Two seasons ago Benfica bowed out after the group stage for the third year running, finishing third in their section
behind Leipzig and Lyon with seven points, ahead of Zenit on head-to-head record. They went on to lose 5-4 on
aggregate to Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Europa League round of 32.
• That was the tenth time Benfica had failed to reach the UEFA Champions League knockout phase in their 15
attempts.
• Benfica began their 2021/22 European campaign in the third qualifying round, where they won 2-0 both away and at
home against Spartak Moskva. They then edged out PSV Eindhoven in the play-offs (2-1 h, 0-0 a) in a repeat of the
1988 European Cup final.
• Benfica's 2020/21 UEFA Champions League campaign lasted a single match, a 2-1 defeat at PAOK in the third
qualifying round. They went on to finish second in their UEFA Europa League section behind Rangers before losing 4-
3 on aggregate to Arsenal in the round of 32, a 1-1 draw in Rome preceding a 3-2 loss in Piraeus with both games
played at neutral venues.
• The Portuguese side are unbeaten in eight European games in Lisbon (W6 D2), winning the last three; a 2-1 loss
against Leipzig on Matchday 1 of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League is their sole defeat in 14 European matches
at their own stadium (W9 D4).
• The Lisbon giants have reached seven European Cup finals, winning the trophy in 1961 and 1962 but losing on their
five subsequent appearances, most recently against AC Milan in 1990.
• Benfica last faced Spanish opponents in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League group stage, when they won 2-1 at
Atlético de Madrid before a home defeat by the same scoreline. That win in Madrid is their only success in their last 17
matches (D7 L9) with Spanish sides, since a 2-1 victory at Real Betis on 29 September 1982.
• The Eagles have lost their last three games to Spanish visitors in Lisbon and are without a win in eight (D4 L4).
• Their two European Champion Clubs' Cup triumphs, in 1961 and 1962, both came against Spanish teams –
Barcelona and Real Madrid (5-3). More recently, Benfica lost 4-2 on penalties to Sevilla after a goalless draw in the
2013/14 UEFA Europa League final in Turin.

Barcelona
• Barcelona were third in the 2020/21 Spanish Liga behind Atlético and Real Madrid, the first time they had finished
out of the top two since 2007/08, when they also came third.
• Last season Barcelona also failed to reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since
2006/07, losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 (1-4 h, 1-1 a). That ended their record run of 13 successive
last-eight appearances.
• The Catalan club had finished second in Group G behind Juventus, with both sides picking up 15 points; a 3-0
Matchday 6 win at the Camp Nou gave the Italian side the head-to-head advantage. It was the first time Barcelona
had not won their group since 2006/07, when they were also eliminated in the round of 16.
• The defeat by Juve was Barcelona's first loss in the UEFA Champions League group stage since a 3-1 reverse at
Manchester City on Matchday 4 in 2016/17; their record in the previous 25 group games was W19 D6.
• The Matchday 1 loss to Bayern was the first time Barcelona had suffered successive group defeats since September
2000.
• Barcelona had not lost their opening UEFA Champions League game since a 3-2 defeat at Newcastle on Matchday
1 in 1997/98. They finished bottom of their section that season with five points.
• The Catalan club last went four UEFA Champions League matches without a win in 2013 (D2 L2).
• Barça have won only nine of their last 21 away matches in European competition (D8 L4), although they are
unbeaten in their last eight (W5 D3).
• Barcelona won 1-0 away and 2-0 at home against Benfica's Lisbon rivals Sporting CP in the 2017/18 UEFA
Champions League group stage, their last games against a Portuguese club. Their record away to Portuguese sides
is W5 D3 L4.
• The Blaugrana are unbeaten in their last 16 matches against Portuguese opponents, home and away (W13 D3),
since a 1-0 loss at Belenenses in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup first round.

Competition facts
UEFA Champions League: Did you know?
Overall records
• Chelsea in 2012/13 are the only defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA
Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that
featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and
lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to CSKA Moskva.
• In 2016/17 Real Madrid became the first team to successfully defend the UEFA Champions League trophy, with AC
Milan (1989, 1990) the previous club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), Ajax (1995, 1996),
Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as
holders only to lose.
• Real Madrid then made it three wins in a row in 2017/18, becoming the fourth club to win three or more successive
titles in European Cup history, and the first to do it twice.
• Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in
Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months
later Bayern München were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
• Bayern's victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the 2020 UEFA Champions League final was their 11th successive
win in the competition (18 September 2019 to 23 August 2020), setting a new record that they extended to 15 before
being held at Atlético de Madrid on Matchday 5 in 2020/21. Bayern themselves (2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013)
and Real Madrid (23 April 2014 to 18 February 2015) jointly held the previous best with ten, one more than
Barcelona's winning run between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003.
Group stage
• Barcelona have finished as group winners on 21 occasions, four more than Real Madrid and Bayern München and
six more than Manchester United. Barça also hold the record for the most unbeaten group stage campaigns with 13,
five more than Real Madrid.
• Seven teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93),
Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95), Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage), Real Madrid
(2011/12 and 2014/15) and Bayern (2019/20).
• Twenty-one teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point,
most recently AEK Athens in 2018/19.
• In 2017/18, Paris Saint-Germain set a new group stage record by scoring 25 goals, one more than Bayern München
managed in 2019/20. Liverpool are next on the list having scored 23 in 2017/18 with Borussia Dortmund hitting 21 in
2016/17. Manchester United (1998/99), Barcelona (2011/12, 2016/17) and Real Madrid (2013/14) all managed 20.
• Only Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05), Maccabi Haifa (2009/10) and Dinamo Zagreb (2016/17) have failed to score in
a group stage.
• BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in 2014/15, a new group stage record which was matched by Legia Warszawa in
2016/17. The previous mark, 22, was held by Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and Nordsjælland (2012/13).
• No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93),
Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06),
Manchester United (2010/11), Monaco (2014/15), Paris Saint-Germain (2015/16), Barcelona (2017/18) and
Manchester City (2020/21) all let in just one.
• Matchday 6 of 2013/14 marked FCSB's 23rd successive game in the competition without a victory, surpassing the
previous record of 22 set by Spartak Moskva between December 2000 and November 2006.
• Marseille hold the record for successive defeats in the competition, group stage to final, having lost 13 in a row
between March 2012 and November 2020. The 2-0 loss at home to Porto on Matchday 4 of the 2020/21 competition
surpassed Anderlecht's previous competition record of 12 losses in a row between December 2003 and November
2005. Dinamo Zagreb are next with 11 consecutive losses on two occasions, from September 2011 to November
2012 and September 2015 to December 2016.
• The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: Zenit in 2013/14 and Roma in 2015/16.
Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, ten teams have made it through with seven points: Legia
Warszawa (1995/96), Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Liverpool (2001/02, second group stage), Lokomotiv Moskva
(2002/03, first group stage) and eventual finalists Juventus (2002/03, second group stage), Rangers and Werder
