c) (i) A geologist working in the field drinks her morning coffee using an aluminium cup with
the mass of 120g at 20°C. if she pours in 300g of coffee at 70°C, calculate the final
temperature after the coffee and the cup attain thermal equilibrium?
(Specific heat capacity of aluminium is 910 J/kg°C and coffee is 4200 J/kg°C.
There is no heat exchange with the surroundings). [2M] 𝜃𝑓 = 66.01℃

(ii) Calculate the heat quantity needed to increase 20N of water from 10°C to 98°C.

temperature after system comes to thermal equilibrium. Assume that no thermal

(iii) 200 g of milk at temperature of 18 C poured into jug with 800 g of hot chocolate
with temperature of 80 C. The final temperature of the mixture is 65 C. Find the
value of specific heat capacity of hot chocolate if there is no interchange of heat
from outside. Given specific heat capacity of milk is 3770 J/kg C.

c) An aluminium plate with a mass of 500g has been heated from 31 C to 80 C . Then
the aluminium plate was placed into a container that has 700g of Liquid Y at a
temperature of 15 C. Calculate:

(i) The quantity of heat that is used to heat an aluminium plate

Convert the following units of temperature:
(i) 200 C to Kelvin [2M] 473.15K
(ii) 80 F to Kelvin [2M] 299.81 K
(iii) 120 K to Fahrenheit [2M] - 67.3 C

c) (i) Calculate the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 5 kg aluminium
from 10 C to 80 C. Specific heat capacity of aluminium is 900 J/kgC.

(ii) A 50 g of gold at temperature of 200 C was placed in a container which contains


90 g of water. The equilibrium temperature of the mixture is 40 C. Calculate the
initial temperature of the water before it is mixed with gold.

(iii) 450 g of vegetable oil at temperature of 60 C is poured into a well-insulated


beaker. Another 870 g of vegetable oil at 90 C is mixed and stirred well inside
the beaker. Calculate the final temperature of the mixture if there is no
interchange of heat from outside. [6M] 79.77 C

c) A butcher puts 13kg of beef into freezer. The initial temperature of the beef is 27C.
After an hour, the temperature drops to xC. The amount of heat lost is -705.7 Joule.
Given the specific heat capacity of the beef is 2.81 J/kgC. Find the value of x.

d) Mr. Gold is hiding a 1355g of gold bar with a temperature 35C inside a tank full of
water with a temperature of 97C. If the mass of the water is 25kg, calculate the final
temperature of the gold bar.

b) (i) Three process of heat transfer are convection, conduction and radiation. Briefly
explain what is convection. [3M]

(iii) A substance with a mass of 4.5kg absorbs heat of 6500 J when heated from 30C
to 60C. Find specific heat capacity of the substance. [3M] 𝑐 = 48.15 𝐽/𝑘𝑔℃

c) (i) Calculate the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of a mass of 2kg
copper at 25C to 35C. Given the specific heat capacity of copper is 400 J/kgC.
[3M] 𝑄 = 8000 𝐽

(ii) Calculate the final temperature of the water mixture if 100g of water at a
temperature of 85C was poured into 200g of water at 25C. Assume that there is
no loss of heat energy. [6M] 𝜃𝑓 = 45℃

(iii) A steel block with a mass of 30g and the temperature of 100C was put into a
container of water. The water temperature is 20C. If the temperature of the
mixture is 25C, calculate the mass of water in the container (unit kg). Given the
specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kgC and steel is 1400 J/kgC.

of X is 4200 J/kgC and Y is 390 J/kgC. The initial temperature of X is 28C and Y is
80C. When X and Y are mixed, the final temperature of the mixture is 65C.
Calculate: (assume that there is no heat lost to the surrounding)
(i) Heat of Y [4M] 𝑄𝑌 = 529 200 𝐽
(ii) Mass of Y [4M] 𝑚𝑌 = 90.46 𝑘𝑔
(iii) Heat capacity for Y [3M] 𝑐𝑌 = 35 280 𝐽/℃

d) A 4kg metal at temperature 600C is put into 3kg of water at temperature 30C . Find
the final temperature.
(Specific heat capacity of metal is 120 J/kgC, specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kgC)

b) Explain about thermal equilibrium in the heat energy system. [3M]

c) Calculate the quantity of heat required to raise the temperature of 5kg iron from 20C
to 70C. Specific heat capacity of iron is 452 J/kgC. [3M] 𝑄 = 113 𝑘𝐽

d) A metal block with a mass of 0.5kg is heated to 100C in boiling water. It is then
transferred into a beaker containing 2kg of water at 27C. If the final temperature of
water in the beaker is 32C, determine the specific heat capacity of the metal.
Assume there is no energy loss of heat to the surroundings and ignore the heat that is
transferred to the beaker. [7M] 𝑐𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑎𝑙 = 1235.3 𝐽/𝑘𝑔℃

e) 0.1kg of water at 85C is added into 0.2kg of water at 25C. Calculate the final
temperature of the mixture. Given that specific heat capacity of water is 4200 J/kgC.
