ICT TOOLS
Hardware.
The physical components that make up the computer system. These are the tangible (you can
touch) parts of a system.
Software.
The programs and applications stored in a computer. They are divided into two, the system
software and application software. Programs are series of instructions that tell the hardware
how to perform tasks.
Components of Hardware
a. Input devices
b. Output devices
c. System unit
d. Storage devices
e. Communications devices
Computer software
Software allows hardware on our computer to work and achieve our goals as users.
System software
These are programs that manage and support the computer resources and operations of a
computer while it does various tasks.
These programs allow the hardware to run efficiently. Eg BIOS (Basic Input Output System),
Operating System, Utility programs.
It controls the operations of a computer –it coordinates the various parts of a computer system
to make it run efficiently.
These are instructions and set up on how the system should boot and how it will operate.
BIOS include instructions on how to load basic computer hardware and include a test called
POST(power on self test) that helps verify that the computer meets the requirements to boot
up properly.
a. POST – testing computer hardware and make sure no errors exist before loading the OS.
b. Bootstrap loader – locate the OS, if found the BIOS will pass control to it.
c. BIOS driver – gives the computer basic operational control over its hardware.
d. CMOS setup – allows you to configure hardware settings including system settings such
as computer passwords, time and date.
