24 January 2022 “Rhetorical Analysis of Definition Assignment”

1. Purposes:
Usually a document has more than 1 purpose. In general, typically Wikipedia provides information
to a broad, diverse audience. The purpose of the definition assignment is to create an extended
definition to a chosen keyword. In my case, I want to educate my audience and provide a general
basic understanding. I also want to show different examples of how my keyword will apply to
different things. For example, if my chosen keyword is an analytical chemistry technique, I will
provide examples of how it can be applied to different fields of work.

2. Intended Readers:
The most obvious readers would be general readership of Wikipedia. I can also think of other
intended readers as well. For examples college students who are just learning about the material.
Perhaps someone who is just starting a career in an industry related to the topic and wants to have
a general idea. It can also be someone who landed on the page after following hyperlink.

3. Order of Information:
Short introduction paragraph that briefly defines the keyword followed by a broad overview. Then,
it will eventually become more and more specific. For example, I can give examples, different
applications, how it works, perhaps advantages and disadvantages.

4. Types of Evidence:
References to peer-reviewed works, graphics, methods. Graphics could include illustration of the
principle of operation, picture of the item. Methods could perhaps talk about different available
techniques/resources.

5. Style and Tone:

Casual and somewhat formal. Since the readers might/might not have a background in science, I
need to make sure to use a common vocabulary. If there are any terms that people might not be
familiar about, I should also define the terms briefly. I think I should also avoid sentences that are
too long, especially in the brief overview section. Also, I need to avoid overly emotional tone.

6. Graphics:
The purpose of graphic presentation is to help intended readers focus their attention on what is the
most important sections of my text. I am thinking to bold and make the headings and subheadings
bigger than the text. Also, dividing longer paragraph into shorter paragraph helps to make the text a
bit easier to read. Perhaps I can also put certain words in italics.
