Case Study 1: Apple Merging Technology, Business, and

Entertainment

Questions:

1) Why are data, information, business intelligence, and knowledge important to Apple? Give an
example of each type in relation to the iPad.

Ans: Through the strategic use of data, information, business intelligence and knowledge,
Apple is able to track the use of it products and programs to see if they are being accepted
andused by many consumers, or don’t attract attention and fail. Another reason that data
andinformation are very important to Apple is that having the ability to show outside accessory
andapp companies the usage of Apple products in comparison to others. When Apple can
providestatistics that show tablet users download more apps on the iPad than other tablets, the
creationof accessories for the iPad is more attractive to potential companies. This in turn can
result in alarger accessory selection available for the iPad as opposed to other similar tablet
devices.

2) Explain how Apple achieved business success through the use of information, information
technology, and people.

Ans: Apple's economic success was built on the usage of data from all aspects of operations to
provide its goods a competitive edge. Converting data into meaningful information has the
potential to transform a product from simple to complete. An organization's effectiveness and
efficiency can be improved by sharing shared information. Apple's success owed a lot to Steve
2

Jobs. He was a perfectionist who demanded that every product be flawless. Every department is
reliant on one another and works collaboratively to achieve the greatest results.

Managers can become more skilled in their company functions, and organisation departments
can become more effective, thanks to information technology. Computers and computer
software can be controlled via information technology. Jobs aspires to have complete control
over the fundamental technology in all of his endeavours. He was preoccupied with control, and
he wanted the i-Pod to only play songs encoded by Apple, which would limit the i-Pod market.
Then he had the brilliant idea of landing with a Windows compatible iPod, which boosted i-Pod
sales. Apple's designs are distinctive, and its gadgets rely on standard technologies more than
others. His decision to change was critical to Apple's extraordinary success over the last 10
years. Jobs gained more power by relinquishing some authority.

All Apple users receive the best customer assistance available. Apple staff are intelligent and
helpful, specialists at connecting consumers and assisting them in integrating into their life.
Organizations are now more concerned than ever before with the satisfaction of their
customers. Apple understands that a company can't succeed if it doesn't have customers.
Customers' feedback and ideas regarding Apple's goods are used to develop new products and
devices. This is critical for customers to remain loyal and use them in the future.

Case Study 2: Walmart

Questions:

1) How IT and IS may be used to help the company operate and achieve its objective.

Ans: IT and IS are cutting-edge technologies that have transformed the commercial world. It
has made it incredibly simple to achieve goals and objectives. Walmart has also decided to
implement this technology to help update its operations. Computerized accounting systems
were the company's first investments, and the company's continuous embrace of cutting-edge
technology has driven it to the forefront of the retail business. Wal-Mart developed a
well-equipped computerised Point of Sale system that can mark each unit sold, generate
detailed purchase receipts, and save all details item by item for sales evaluation and inventory
reordering. It aided the business in reducing product overstocking through effective knowledge
management, as well as investing only in profitable, in-demand products.
3

In 2004, Wal-Mart became the first retailer to deploy electronic radio frequency identification
(RFID) tags to manage inventory distribution. They use RFID technology to track inventory flow
across their supply chain. Wal-Mart currently wants to use remote technology via the internet
and personal portable devices to allow customers to choose and purchase things from the shop
or at home without having to leave their homes. It allows the corporation to offer its products
online, increasing revenue. It also allows the organisation to observe and respond to client
comments in order to improve service quality.

2) Discuss the challenges faced by the CIO - which are the most important and why?

Ans: Every company needs to deal with a variety of issues. The management of the data
framework is a major issue. It's also dangerous. The organisation is dealing with threats to its
data. Changes in technology are increasing data uncertainty. Because if a corporation does not
protect its data, it will be in trouble. Ascertain that the association's data is secure so that it
does not get into the hands of competitors. Because the previous powers can't be used in
another and ongoing innovation, the new improvements require representatives to acquire new
abilities. As a result, new skills need be developed in response to changing industry conditions.
When your competitors introduce something new, you must respond with a fresh innovation.
No one can thrive in the long term without innovation. It's a major issue for CIO. Because it is
necessary for every organisation to stay current in order to maintain a competitive advantage.

3) What role does information technology play in the business? How is it helping Walmart refine
its business strategies?

Ans: Information technology's role in the Walmart business:

1. In Walmart's company, information technology is critical in attracting new customers

through the development of Smartphone Apps.

2. Customers can place orders from this online shopping website if the things they want are out
of stock in the retail store.

3. It establishes a club to test the new service by allowing buyers to place orders online but not
pay for them.

Walmart's business tactics are being fine-tuned:

4

1. Walmart benefits from information technology by connecting its retail store, online, and
mobile apps to improve its job.

2. In this business, the consumer places an order online and receives the purchased things at
the store, eliminating the need for the customer to queue to purchase the item

3. It keeps an eye on the price of the order retailer and, if necessary, decreases the item price
while purchasing online.

4. It makes it more difficult for third-party retailers to compete and increases the quantity of
things available to shoppers.

4) Summarize the main purposes of information systems in organizations.

Ans: The information system (IS) is the platform on which businesses manage and store their
data. It can assist the firm in effectively managing their operations. The company's strategic
decisions are also aided by the information system. Hardware, software, and
telecommunications are all part of it. Organizations employ information systems for a variety of
reasons.

a) The company's operations will be simplified and revenue will improve as a result of the use of
information systems.

b) Another essential goal is to keep organisational data in a small amount of space while
eliminating paperwork. It also lowers the overall cost of the organisation.

b) It aids in customer relationship management and the identification of the target customer.

d) Large amounts of data can be evaluated quickly, reducing human error.
