Static Discharging Probe Maintenance Practices

STATIC DIsCHARGE PROBE MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

1. Removalnstallation

NOTE: The following Renmovalinslallation procedure is epplicable to static dhscharge probe

supplied by Chelfon and to staBic discharge probes supplied by HR Smith. Refer toPC Chapler 27
for the part numbers of static discharge probes.

A. Remove discharge probe

(1) Loosen retaining screw at the rear of the discharge probe by two or three turns.

(2) Support the base and push or tap the screw to release the grip of the taper on the
probe in the base.

CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RELEASE THE DISCHARGE

PROBE BY PULLING ON THE ROD.

(3) With the taper grip released, remove the retaining screw completely and remove
discharge probe.
B. Install discharge probe

CAUTION: WHEN A STATIC DI SCHARGE PROBE IS REPLACED WITH A PROBE

OF A DIFFERENT MANUFACTURE (e.g. CHELTON FOR HR SMITH OR HR SMITH
FOR CHELTON), THE cONTROL SURFACE MuST BE REBALANCED IN
ACCORDANCE WITH THE SRM(CHAPTER 51.CONTROL SURFACE BALANCING)
(1) Remove the retaining screw from the end of the discharge probe.

(2) Plug discharge probe lightly into base and engage retaining screw by a few tums.

(3) Push discharge probe firmly home into base by finger pressure on the thick end of
the tapered sleeve.

CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE DISCHARGE PROBE

INTO ITS SOCKET BY PRESSURE ON THE ROD OR TIP.

(4) Tighten the retaining screw to install the probe, while holding the sleeve to prevent
turning, tighten the screw a further two full turns to pull the taper sleeve into tight
engagement.

2. Adjustment/Test

A. Test resistance of discharge probe (wire tuft type)

(1) Connect a 500 volt Megger between the fixing base sleeve and the wire tuft.

(2) Check resistance of rod is between 7 and 80 megohms (Types 2-11. 2-11-S and 2
12) or 5 and 60 megohms (Type 2-18-S)

(3) Disconnect the Megger.

B. Test resistance of discharge probe (carbon composition type)

(1) Connect a 500 volt Megger between the fixing base sleeve and the carban tip.

CAUTION: CONNECTION TO THE CARBON TIP MUST BE OVERTHE

ENTIRE EXPO SED AREA OF THE TIP. A CROCODILE CLIP MUST
NOT BE USED.

(2) Check that resistance of probe is between 20 and 150 Megohms (types 2-11-SC-1
and 2-18-SC-1).

(3) Disconnect the Megger.

C. Test bonding of discharge probe

(1) Using a suitable test set, make sure that resistance between sleeve on base
assembly and airplane skin adjacent to base assembly does not exceed 0.05 ohm.

3. Inspection/Check

A. Wire tuft check

(1) Make sure that each discharge probe has not more than 50%, of wire tufts missing
and a minimum tuft length of 1/16 in. (1.6 mm).

B. Carbon tip types

(1) Make sure that each discharge probe is present and with no obvious damage.
