CAUSATIVE HAVE

PASSIVE
(have something done)
DEFINITON OF CAUSATIVE
It’s used when the speakers refer to actions that are done to an object by somebody else.
It's called causative because the subject causes the action to be done by somebody else.

The causatives is used to talk about situations where someone provides a service for us
/ someone pay for a service.

BASIC CONCEPT
1. You don’t do the action
2. Someone else do the action
3. You are in control
I repaired I had/got

SITUATION WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE SERVICE PROVIDER

CAUSATIVE HAVE PASSIVE Have / get + something + V3
- I had my hair cut. - I had my bike repaired. - I had my jewelry valued.
THE STRUCTURE OF CAUSATIVE HAVE PASSIVE
Subject + have / get (any tense) + object (usually thing) + V3 (past participle) +………….
Can HAVE & GET be used interchangeably ? GET is slightly more informal.

My hair was too long. So, I___________(cut). - By a hairdresser


Answer : had my hair cut
We use the Passive Causative when it's obvious or not important to say who performs
the action or when we don't know who does the action just like in the Passive Voice. We
usually don't say "I had my hair cut by a hairdresser", we simply say "I had my hair cut".
THE MEANING OF CAUSATIVE HAVE PASSIVE
I had my hair cut. I ask someone to cut my hair
I had my bike repaired. I ask someone to repair my bike.
I had my jewelry valued. I ask someone to value my jewelry.
CAUSATIVE HAVE PASSIVE IN TENSES
The Causative structure can be used in different tenses, just like the Passive Voice. So you
can use “causative have passive” in all sorts of tenses.
Present simple He has the house painted. Subject + have / get (any tense) +
Present continuous He is having the house painted. something+ V3 (p.p.)
Past simple He had the house painted. Bare Infinitive
He must / can / should have the house painted.
Past continuous He was having the house painted.
Future simple He will have the house painted. Full Infinitive
Present perfect He has had the house painted. I would like / love to have the house painted.
Present perfect He has been having the house I would hate to have the house unpainted.
continuous painted.
My parents don’t want me to have my body
Past perfect He had had the house painted. tattooed.
Past perfect He had been having the house I am going to have the house painted.
continuous painted.
SPECIFIC USE OF CAUSATIVE HAVE PASSIVE
It’s also used when some events are outside of our control, when those events are unpleasant.
I don't know how that happened but I had my phone stolen at a party.

My neighbor has had her house broken into 3 times this month. She'd better change her lock.
This guy had his hand stuck under a boulder.

This is a very unpleasant situation, moreover he had no control over the boulder falling.
