Question – 1

What are the main challenges associated with implementing fully-fledged ERP, CRM, and SCM
systems?

Answer - 1

1. Challenges Associated With Implementing CRM System

Although the potential business benefits of customer relationship management are many this
benefits are not guaranteed and, instead, have proven elusive at many companies. Surveys by
industry research groups include a report that more than 50 percent of CRM projects did not
produce the results that were promised. In another research report, 20 percent of businesses
surveyed reported that CRM implementations had actually damaged long-standing customer
relationships. The common wisdom of why CRM systems fail includes:
 Lack of senior management sponsorship
 Improper change management
 Elongated projects that take on too much, too fast
 Lack of or poor integration between CRM and core business systems
 Lack of end-user incentives leading to poor user adoption rates

Despite the above, research shows that the major reason for CRM failure is a familiar one: lack of
understanding and preparation.
For example, in many cases, failed CRM projects were implemented without the participation of the
business stakeholders involved. Therefore, employees and customers were not prepared for the new
processes or challenges that were part of the new CRM implementation.

2. Challenges Associated With Implementing ERP System

ERP serves as a cross-functional enterprise backbone that integrates and automates many internal
business processes and information systems within the manufacturing, logistics, distribution,
accounting, finance, and human resource functions of a company.
An ERP implementation involves people as well as technology. Accordingly, it may face people-
related challenges, such as resistance to change, as well as technical obstacles. Common ERP
implementation challenges include:

 It requires meticulous project management. Additionally, successful ERP implementations require

participation from all the groups that will be involved in developing and using the system.
 Organizations often underestimate the time and budget necessary for a successful ERP implementa-
tion. In almost every case, the business managers and IT professionals of these companies underes-
timated the complexity of the planning, development, and training that were needed to prepare for
a new ERP system that would radically change their business processes and information systems.
 One of the key advantages of ERP is that it provides a single, accurate source of data for the whole
organization. A key step in ERP implementation is data migration, which typically involves mov-
ing data from multiple older systems into the ERP database. This can be a major challenge so a well-
planned data migration can help to keep the entire ERP implementation project on time and on
budget.
 It requires continuous improvement: An ERP implementation is not a one-off effort that ends when
the new system goes live. The solution must continue to evolve to support new business demands
and technology.

3. Challenges Associated With Implementing SCM System

 A lack of proper demand planning knowledge, tools, and guidelines is a major source of SCM failure
and challenges.
 Inaccurate or overoptimistic demand forecasts will cause major production, inventory, and other
business problems, no matter how efficient the rest of the supply chain management process is con-
structed.
 Inaccurate production, inventory, and other business data provided by a company’s other infor-
mation systems are a frequent cause of SCM problems. In addition, lack of adequate collaboration
among marketing, production, and inventory management departments within a company, and with
suppliers, distributors, and others, will sabotage any SCM system.
 Many companies that are installing SCM systems consider even the SCM software tools themselves
to be immature, incomplete, and hard to implement.
