This module discusses the topics that will help the learners to develop the ability
to formulate a research problem and find answers towards these inquiries or questions.
The learners need more time to think in finalizing the decision about a particular topic to
research on or in determining the appropriateness of such topic by obtaining the
background information of the study, and formulating some questions that you want to
answer.

Intended Leaning Outcomes

After this lesson, you should be able to:

1. design a research useful in daily life;

2. write a research title;

3. describe background of research;

4. state research questions;

5. Indicate scope and limitations of the study;

6. cite benefits and beneficiaries of study; and

7. presents written statement of the problem.

LESSON 1: RESEARCH IN OUR DAILY LIFE

As stated by Monteverde (2017), RESEARCH PROBLEM is a statement about


an area of concern, a condition to be improved upon, a difficulty to be eliminated, or a
troubling question that exists in scholarly literature, theory, or practice that point to the
need for a meaningful understanding and deliberate investigation.

SOURCES OF RESEARCH PROBLEMS

* Personal interests and experiences

Some examples are: The use of formative tests in a statistics class; and the use of

technology in a research class.

* Deduction from theory

Some examples are: The effectiveness of math manipulative; and the effectiveness of a

mastery approach to learning research.

* Replication of studies

Some examples are: Checking the findings of a major study; checking the validity of
research findings with different subjects; and checking trends or changes over time.

CHARACTERISTICS OF A RESEARCH PROBLEM

1. A research problem is not just answerable by yes or no. It should imply that

explanation and justifications regarding the true situation or observations.

RESEARCH TOPICS TO BE AVOIDED

1. Controversial topics - These are topics that depend greatly on the writer’s opinion

which tend to be biased or prejudicial. Facts cannot support topics like these.

2. Highly technical subjects - For a beginner, researching on topics that require an

advance study, technical knowledge,, and vast experience is very difficult.

3. Hard-to-investigate subjects - A topic or a subject is hard to investigate if there is no

available data or reading materials about it and if such materials are not-up-date or

obsolete.

4. Too broad subjects - A subject or a topic that are too broad will prevent the

researcher from giving a concentrated or in depth analysis of the subject matter of the

research paper.

5. Too narrow subjects - The subjects are so limited or specific that an extensive or

thorough searching or reading for information about the subject is necessary.

6. Vague subjects - Choosing topics like these will prevent you from having a clear

Insights or focus on your study. For instance, titles beginning with indefinite

adjectives such as several, many, some, etc., as in Some Remarkable Traits of an

Ilocano, Several People’s Comments on the Extra Judicial Killings, are vague enough

Writing a Research Title

When writing a title in research paper, authors should realize that despite being
repeatedly warned against it, most of the people do indeed fall prey to judging a book by
its cover. This cognitive bias tends to form readers considerably vulnerable to alowing
the research paper title to function because of sole factor influencing their decision of

whether to read or skip a particular paper. Considering this, it is clear that the title of
your paper is the most important determinant of how people will read it.

ELEMENTS OF RESEARCH

A good research paper title:

LESSON 2: RESEARCH BACKGROUND

The background of the study establishes the context of the research. This section
explains why this particular research topic is important and essential to understanding the
main aspect of the study. Usually, the background forms the first part of a research

article or thesis and justifies the need for conducting the study and summarizes what the
study aims to achieve (Sachdev, 2018)

How to structure the background of the study

Dr. Rishibha Sachdev emphasized that the author usually outlines the historical
development in the literature that led to the current topic of research concisely.

In addition, the writer should briefly highlight the main developments of their
research topic and identify the main gaps that need to be addressed. They should be
organized as:

* What is known about the broad topic?

* What are the gaps or missing links that need to be addressed?

* What is the significance of dressing those gaps?

* What is the rationale and hypothesis of your study?

Therefore, the background should be written as a summary of your


interpretation of previous research and what your study proposes to accomplish. And
again do not elaborate the studies done in the literature review section.

A research question forms the base of where you are going, according to
Kowalczyk (2018), the researcher have to write a good research question.

Writing a Research Question

Writing a good research question means you have something you want to study.
There are steps in writing a research question.

* Specify your specific concern or issue

* Decide what you want to know about the specific concern into a question

* Ensure that the question is answerable

* Check to make sure the question is not too broad or too narrow

It is important to narrow down your thesis topic and limit the scope of your study.
The researcher should inform the reader about limits or coverage of the study. The scope

frame, and the issues to which the research is focused.

The delimitation of the study is delimiting a study by geographic location, age, sex,
population traits, population size, or other similar considerations. Delimitation is used to
make study better and more feasible and not just for the interest of the researcher. It also

the researcher.

Significance of the study

In this section, according to the blog of Cueva, (2018) he said that the
significance of the study is a part of the introduction of a thesis/research. It should
determine who benefit from its findings. The significance of the study could be simply
reflected by the following two questions:

1. Why should my study be published?

2. What significant scientific contribution is my study making to my field of research?

On the other hand, according to Cobar (2016), significance of the study is written
as part of the introduction of a thesis. It provides details to the reader on how the study
will contribute such as what the study will contribute and who will benefit from it. It
also includes an explanation of the work’s importance as well as its potential benefits. It
is sometimes called rationale.

Writing the Significance of the Study

1. Statement of the problem will guide you to write a significance of the study. Based

on the statement of the problem you will see the potential benefits of your study.

Just answer the question, “What are the benefits or advantage of the study based on

the statement of the problem?’

2. Determine the specific contribution of your thesis study to the society as to the

individual.
