Communication: RS485
RS485 signals are floating and each signal is transmitted over a + line and a - line.

RS485 receiver compares the voltage difference between both lines, instead of
the absolute voltage level on a signal line.

With RS485 there is no any common zero as a signal reference.

Several volts difference in the ground level of the RS485 transmitter and receiver does
not cause any problems.

10 Confidential
Communication: RS485

Even better EM noise resistance results are achieved if the + and - lines are twisted.
Image below explains why.

When the cable is twisted, direction

of the noise current is the opposite
in different parts of the cable.

Because of this, the resulting noise

current is many factors lower than
with an ordinary straight cable.

RS485 communication lines: string inverters

RS485 line connection

Power-One inverters use a RS485 Half-
Duplex communication line.

The cable used must be a screened twisted

pair with a characteristic impedance
Z0=120Ohm.

Continuity along the communication line

must be given to the shielding and this last
must be grounded at one end only.

Cabl
•Connect all units of the RS485 chain in accordance with the “daisy-
Signal Symbol Pair chain” scheme (“in-out”) respecting the correspondence between the
e
signals;
POSITIVE DATA +T/R A 1 •Activate, in the last element of the chain, the termination resistance of
the communication line by switching the dedicated dip-switch;
NEGATIVE
DATA
-T/R A 2 •Set a different RS485 address on each inverter for every inverter of the
chain. NO INVERTERS SHOULD HAVE “Auto” AS AN ADDRESS;
REFERENCE RTN B 1+2 •The communication line should be no longer than 1000m in length;
•Do not connect more than 64 inverters to the same RS485
communication line.

Value of Monitoring

• Plants without Solar Monitoring

 Increased frequency and duration of power generation outages
 Increased operational expenses
 Risk of not knowing if the system is underperforming
 Cannot easily compare actual against expected energy generation
 Cannot benchmark expected performance of different technologies

• Plants with Solar Monitoring

 Maximizing solar energy production and revenue
 Measures performance from strings, inverters and generation meters
 Identifies low performance and reduces power loss
 Increases operational productivity for reduced total cost of ownership
