It describes 3 porting methods of increasing difficulty: 1) Using system.img and update.zip files, 2) Direct patching of boot images and firmware, and 3) A "native" porting method involving replacing files and rebuilding the ROM zip. Examples are given for specific ROMs along with potential issues like cameras not working or launchers force closing.

USING DSIXDA ANDROID KITCHEN FOR ROM PORTING TO ANY MT6573

by yuweng@xda

As a basic rule of thumb, always port ROM from the same screen size/ specifications as your
device. Eg. If yours is a 3.5 inch then select custom ROM with the same screen size. Where
else if yours is a 4.0 inch then select custom ROM with 4.0 inch screen or else at lot of
features will not work such as camera & etc will force close.

General porting features with dsixda's Android Kitchen that can be use on MT6573
From Base Stock ROM From Custom ROM
1. system.img system.img
2. system.img update.zip
3. update.zip system.img
4. update.zip update.zip

Porting Method 1 ( Super Easy )

Your Stock system.img as base ROM & port to custom ROM update.zip

Copy your Stock ROM firmware folder from MY_DEVICE_WORKING\system\etc
This firmware folder contains your phone's driver. Typically for MT6573, SIM 2 will not work if
you use firmware from other MT6573 custom ROM. For some, both SIM doesn't work if you
use firmware from custom ROM while if your are lucky & when it is compatible then it will
work.
Now copy your stock firmware to newly created WORKING folder /system/etc/firmware to
replace it with your stock firmware

Ported Yonip OT-918N in working state. For this
ported ROM, camera is not working on my
device while all others are functioning well.
Porting Method 2 ( Medium )
Direct Patching

Go to http://bbs.lewaos.com/download.php to download ROM. Lewa ROM provide Over The

Air (OTA) update. Green color on the left is stable version & update is available once a month.
Blue color on the right is developer test version & it is updated as said in the webpage. The
best thing about Lewa ROM is that it supports MT6573.

With this guide, you can port Lewa to your MT6573

For this example, we're going to use the developer version which can be updated every
friday. There is only one choice for MT6573, that is the Lenovo A60/ A65.
Android Kitchen -> ADVANCED OPTIONS -> Miscellaneous options / Plugin scripts ->
boot.img-MT65xx-unpack

Copy Lewa boot.img to boot.img_MT65xx

You only need the boot.img-ramdisk folder from
Lewa boot.img. Create a new folder name Lewa,
copy to it & delete off everything

Copy your stock boot.img to boot.img_MT65xx folder

Delete off everything except Lewa folder &
boot.img-kernel.img. Copy out boot.img-ramdisk
folder from Lewa folder
Repack it with menu option 1

Rename newboot.img to boot.img & copy it to the desktop

Open Lewa ROM with 7-zip but don't extract it.
Just drag & drop the newly created boot.img into 7-zip
Copy your stock ROM firmware folder beside 7-zip then drag & drop it into 7-zip /system/etc
Porting Method 3 ( Hard )
Native porting

Some custom ROM doesn't work with method 1 or 2 & therefore require what i call as native
porting. This means you're using your stock ROM & patch it with appropriate files from custom
ROM. However, most 4.0 inch mt6573 can be ported without using this method.

Copy your stock ROM & extract custom ROM

to original_update

Extract your stock ROM system.img. At the

WORKING folder, delete off the RED circle
folder

Typically ROM porting for mt6573, app, bin,

etc, fonts, framework, *.so at lib, media & xbin
must be deleted & use custom ROM's file.

For this custom ROM, the fonts is the same

file while the media is for 4.0 inch
bootanimation so i'll just keep my stock ROM
media folder
Copy app, bin, framework, xbin
from G11i_Pro

Paste it to WORKING folder, system

At WORKING folder system/etc, delete
everything except firmware folder.
At the custom ROM etc folder, copy everything except firmware
Paste it to WORKING folder system/etc
Copy *.so from custom rom
/system/lib/

Paste it to WORKING folder

/system/lib/
Put a check mark &
Copy and Replace

All *.so files has been copied to WORKING folder

Copy HoloLauncher_1.1.0.apk or any other launcher to WORKING folder /system/app

This is because G11 default SenseLauncherG11.apk will FC & is not compatible for use at
other MT6573

Use the same previous procedure as Lewa ROM to repack G11 boot.img-ramdisk folder with
your stock ROM boot.img-kernel.img.

Delete off META-INF from WORKING folder & copy META-INF & data folder from G11 to
WORKING folder
Select Option 23 to convert updater-script

Select option 1
Press Enter

Press Enter
Select 13

This will add /data/app & automatically update the update-script

Select option 99 to build ROM. Collect your *.zip from OUTPUT_ZIP folder & flash via
CMWR.

First reboot might take awhile. At adb shell, bash is display meaning everything should work.
If it doesn't boot then you must have miss a step. Redo the whole process, try again & it
should work.
As said earlier, this port is 4.0 inch android ported to 3.5 inch. Most 4.0 port to 4.0 works with
Method 1. However, 3.5 inch ported to 4.0 for some ROM is not working too, meaning you
need to use this native porting for it to work.

SenseLauncher will FC when you select it
