Mechanical Design

This document outlines the mechanical design process for a project to design a device to clean household drains more quickly and easily. It describes the problem statement of clogged drains being time-consuming to clean. It then lists the steps of the engineering design process to be followed, including identifying needs, researching, specifying requirements, brainstorming solutions, prototyping, testing, and redesigning. Various creativity techniques are also listed such as morphological charts, concept sketches, and a decision matrix to evaluate design options.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
• The household drain needs to be cleaned every month.
This is to avoid dirt, moss, and clogged with thrash and
debris.
• A clogged drain is problematic and a source of mosquito.
• A popular method is to use drain cleaner brush or water
pressure washer; however, this is time consuming.
• Design a smarter and faster way to clean a standard size
household drain.
• Combine manual brushing action + jet wash to speed up
the process if required. Ignore if you have a better way
i.e. Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) bath.
• Use appropriate Engineering Design Process
Methodology
ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS
1. Identify a need / define the problem

2. Do Background Research

3. Specify Requirements / Constraints

4. Brainstorm Solutions → Evaluate → Select Solution

5. Build a Prototype

6. Test and Evaluate

7. Redesign to Improve Solution / Iterate
