Plan of Investigation
My group’s topic is Addiction and my subtopic is sex addiction. I chose this topic
because I was intrigued with the main character in Two and a Half Men, who is
portrayed as being happy even though he was a sex addict. As an English student,
I hope to expand my vocabulary and improve my summary writing and persuasive
speaking skills. I intend to use a poem, flyer, and comic, sourced via magazines,
books and the internet. I will use my summary writing and vocabulary skills in my
group written report and reflections and persuasive speaking in my oral
presentation.

Reflection 1
Before researching my topic, I noticed people rarely remain faithful to their
partners which may indicate sex addiction hence, I wish to learn more. The poem
“CSI,” shows a traumatized character who engages in sexual gratification to
escape her pain. I learnt that people use sex as a means to escape their pain and
not for mutual companionship.
Reflection 2
The narrative poem, “CSI,” uses personification. An example of personification is,
(lines 10-11) “Vines wrap themselves, Around my wrist,”. It is effective because it
shows the vines which symbolize her uncontrollable lustful desire, latches onto
her hands and are now in control of her actions.
The title of the flyer, “Wings of Change,” is a metaphor. This immediately draws
our attention to the fact that there is hope and rehabilitation via the organization.
This technique is effective because the wings, which represent the support group
will guide and protect you on a path of change, from suffering and pain to
freedom and joy.
The comic, “Addiction,” uses repetition. An example of repetition is, “SEX SEX
SEX,” which was used by the main character, who is trying to convince his friend,
life is more than sex. This repetition reinforces the writer’s point, that sex is a
form of addiction.
Reflection 3
Researching, sex addiction taught me that people use sex as an avenue to escape
reality through instant gratification and cannot recognize that it is a problem. As a
young adult, I have learnt that like any other addiction, sex addiction is real and
can hurt people we love. I know better now how to identify and treat this
problem. While doing this SBA, my summary skills increased and my vocabulary
expanded. Working in a group was enjoyable since we were all friends, however,
there was still the challenge of setting up meetings when we were all available.
We overcame this hurdle by prioritizing our time better. Also, I was not too
excited about doing an English portfolio, on its completion however I felt happy
because I was able to use and improve my English language skill to research an
interesting topic. I feel more confident to do future research projects.
While compiling a list of potential topics for our SBA, we discovered that we
shared a fascination with, “Addiction”. We then collaborated to select our
subtopics: “Drug Addiction”, “Alcohol Addiction”, “Gambling Addiction”, “Internet
Addiction” and “Sex Addiction”, as we noticed these topics had a wealth of
information online and in other texts. We did however experience some
challenges in categorizing and summarizing artefacts on each subtopic, due to the
diversity of each.
Our group met via ZOOM for fifteen sessions, to share our combined collection of
fifteen artefacts, where we selected pieces that best represented our overall
topic. A vote was then cast and three pieces were selected since they provided
the most insightful information about addiction. They were, “Disease of
Addiction” by Jenna Wheeler, “Weed is not Salad” by Doug and Matt and an
online article, “Alcohol Addiction” by Mara Tyler.
The poem, “Disease of Addiction” (2013), related the self-control challenges a
recovering addict may face daily. It revealed that while an addict may want to
change their lifestyle, that change can be enduring. Our group learnt that quitting
drug abuse is not an easy task, as it requires a great level of discipline.
The cartoon, “Weed is not Salad” (2015), comically presented how distorted and
“out of touch” the mind of a drug addict can be. Collectively we learnt that the
mind of a drug abuser can see things differently from a normal individual or non-
drug user and this can be dangerous.
The article, “Alcohol Addiction” (2017), defined alcoholism, its symptoms and
outcomes. Together we learnt that alcoholism does not discriminate against
gender, race, sex or socioeconomic status, rather it can affect anyone who
indulges in its overuse or practice.
Generally, these artefacts demonstrated the physical, mental and emotional,
challenges drug addicts may face in their daily lives.
Word Count - 300
4. Which of the three genres are you most interested in using to deliver your oral presentation:
poetry, drama, or prose?
I chose prose because I can openly speak to express my feelings towards my topic and
clearly explain it. I believe that prose helps me to directly convey my message so that
anyone listening understands and interprets this message.
The language used: I have selected an argumentative genre with a formal language
register because I feel that this kind of speech and language will appropriately express
my message and viewpoint on the subject matter through facts, while also assisting my
audience in understanding the gravity of the situation.
