20 Mark Higher History Essays Checklist
Introduction – 2 Marks
The introduction is a clear indication to the marker you have understood the question. It lays
out what they should expect from your essay and most importantly what your argument
should be. You will be awarded 2 marks for all three components, 1 mark for 2/3 components
and no marks for 1/0 components of the introduction.
KU – 6 Marks
Knowledge marks are the easiest to pick up in your essay. These are the key facts you have
learned for this topic and should include figures, names, places etc. where possible. These
marks are distributed throughout your essay. You should aim for a minimum of 2 facts per
paragraph.
Analysis – 6 Marks
Analysis is demonstrating your ability to answer the question and provide evidence
for/against your argument. (Remember the 2 types of Essay – Analysis will be slightly
different in each!) Analysis is split into basic Analysis – 4 Marks and Analysis + - 2 marks.
Provide an argument supported by evidence then counter this argument (give the other
side of the story. (e.g. On one hand the suffragettes had positive effects such as…
but they also harmed the cause of votes for women by…)
Evaluation – 4 Marks
Evaluation marks are the hardest part of the essay to be given credit for. Evaluation marks
are given when you support your argument with new evidence you have not yet discussed in
analysis/KU. You must also compare 1 factor to another.
You must compare two factors (e.g. Upon evaluation, the war work women did was more
important than the suffragists because every male member of parliament had to
acknowledge the war work done by women and admit they had proven their worth
whereas the suffragists only managed to convince some backbench MPs and some ‘new
liberals’.
Conclusion – 2 Marks
The conclusion is where you bring your essay together and summarise your arguments and
then make a judgment in relation to the question. Your conclusion must be clear and not
include anything you haven’t already mentioned in your essay. In the conclusion you are given
1 mark for making a summary of points and 1 mark for making a judgment supported with
evidence.
