Rhythm is one of the basic elements of music. It is the natural flow of sounds
of music. It is the life and heartbeat of music. We can understand the concept
of rhythm when we personally feel the flow of beats in our body. Some
rhythms are soothing like the sound of the waves. On the other hand, some
rhythms can be energizing enough to make us get up and dance.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify different musical symbols.
2. Recognize rhythmic patterns using quarter note, half note, dotted half note,
dotted quarter note, and eighth note in simple time signatures.
3. Identify the notes in the C and G major scale.
4. Creates different rhythmic patterns using notes and rests in time signature.
Illustrate and write the time value of the following notes and rests.

What I Know/What’s In
Are you aware that rhythm is an essential part of music? The sounds that are formed by counting and
clapping are called rhythm. Listen to a recording of an Ifugao chant entitled Bagbagto. The forefathers
of the Ifugaos chanted this during the war. This is also chanted during harvest time in Bontoc, Mountain
Province.
Watch and listen to video #1, Bagbagto found in Module 1 Learning Resource File
folder in your USB flash drive. You can also watch the video on this site:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiusrPvfk2U&t=4s.
Count one and two, while chanting the Bagbagto and clapping repeatedly at the same time.

A dot written at the right side of a note increases the duration of a note by
half of its original value. Therefore, the sound of a dotted note will now
become longer. Study the chart on the right side.
When you read a musical piece, perhaps you ask yourself how you can
sing or play the piece. As you study the musical symbols, you probably
want to interpret the composition on your own. However, before you
can interpret a musical piece correctly, you must first learn the different
musical symbols and what they mean. See notation symbols at the right
side.
Draw the F-Clef/ Bass Clef and G-Clef/Treble Clef properly on the
staff below then put the note head using whole note on the lines and
on the spaces of the staff. Name the notes by writing the so-fa
syllables below each note.
Intervals
It is the distance between two notes or pitches.
There are two kinds of intervals:
1. Melodic Interval- notes are arranged horizontally and the tones are sounded one after the other.
2. Harmonic Interval- notes are arranged vertically and the tones are sounded together.
Scale
It is a group of pitches arranged in ascending and descending order.
1. The C Major Scale- consists of seven different pitches. It is the simplest of all scales because it has no
sharps or flats. It is also the most common scale. It consists of a combination of whole and half steps
between notes.
2. G Major scale is a major scale that has one sharp (#) located on the F line of the staff. The notes in
this scale are fixed to G tone which is located on the second line of the staff.
