DGkids GRADE 6

This document provides a lesson plan for a 6th grade class on structured information and creating databases in LibreOffice Base. The objectives are for students to understand what structured information is, how it is divided into rows and columns, and to create a table with fields and field types. The lesson will introduce databases, have students complete worksheets to recognize database structure and match data to field types, and create a DVD database in LibreOffice Base with specified fields including a primary key. Materials needed are listed.

Unit 4 Data handling

Task 1 Structured information

OVERVIEW The general purpose of this lesson is for students to understand what structured
information is and how to create a database.
objectives To understand what structured information is
-To realize that structured information is divided
into rows and columns
- To create a table with fields and the corresponding field types.
WHAT IS NEEDED Resources
-Digital Kids Expert Student's Book
- K.64.1 Worksheet_1.docx • K.64.1 Worksheet 2.docx
- K.641 Worksheet 3.docx
-K.64.1 Evaluation Sheet docx
- Computer Store.odb
-Tools & Equipment LibreOffice Base
SKILLS -To mention some examples of structured information.

-To distinguish the records and fields of a database.

-To create a new database using the LibreOffice
-To create and name a table.

-Select the correct field type for each field.

-To set a primary key To save a database.

learning difficulties 1. Lack of documentation Students must name their fields correctly because they
have to clarify what each column in their database is. So, it is essential to create
tables in their database that will contain definitions in its columns so that it is clear
to everyone how they are
intended to be used
2. Choosing a Primary Key A primary key is a field or combination of fields that
uniquely identifies a record in a table, so that an individual form can be located
without confusion The selection of a primary key is one of the most important
decisions to be made in the design of a database because the selected key is unique
Lesson description Introduce the purpose of the lesson to motivate students' interest in databases. Ask
them if they

know of any database examples in their regular Ife. You can tell them about mp3
players that use databases of thousands of songs, or about contact Ests, address
books, and grocery lists.
Hand out the "K.641 Worksheet 1.docx and ask them to read the introduction. They
must understand that structured information helps us find information more
accessible.
2. Investigation – Knowledge Development: Ask students to complete the
worksheet activity. They have to recognize the structure of a database. At this
point, you can mention that a row in a table is a record and a column is a field. A
record is a row of data in a database table consisting of a single value from each
column of data in the table. The data in the columns in a table are all of the same
types. A field is a column that contains a piece of particular information from a
record in a database Students also have to match the different data with the correct
data type. Explain that there are different forms in which data is stored on the
computer, so we have to identify each form
3. Development - Implementation Next, hand out the "K64.1 Worksheet 2 door
Ask students to open LibreOffice Base in order to create a database. First of all, they
have to create an empty base and then they have to add the given field names as
well as the correct field types They probably don't know the form of the table they
created Mention that they created an empty table
and in the next lesson they will add seconds Then, comment on the primary keys. A
primary key is a field that uniquely identifies each record Students have to keep in
mind that a primary key can be made up of more than one field
A primary key should be unique and not be null When people create a new
database table, they are asked to select one primary key that will uniquely identify
records stored in that table.
Ask them to follow the worksheet’s instructions or consult the Student's Book
Digital Kids Expert The final form of the file is the file "Computer Store.
odb"
Finally, hand out the "K6.41 Worksheet 3.docx Students have to follow the same
steps as they did in the previous activity in order to create a new database. Ask
them to open LibreOffice Base to create a database to organize DVDs. Use the fields
below:
1. Movie ID (primary key), Tiny Integer
2. Title, Varchar
3. Release Date, Date
4. Director ID, Varchar
