INTRODUCTION

This Module covers the discussion of the Microsoft Excel application, exploring its parts
and functions. It also provides procedures and activities for mastery of the application.

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:

1. Examine the MS Excel interface and its parts;


2. Specify the advantages of familiarity to Excel interface parts and functions; and
3. Illustrate Excel interface, its parts, and functions.

The MS Word Interface

Learning Objectives: After reading this information you must be able to illustrate the MS Excel
Interface, parts, functions, and its advantages and disadvantages.

MS Excel is an electronic spreadsheet used to organize data into rows and columns and to
perform mathematical calculations.

A. Quick Access Tool Bar – includes shortcuts to frequently used commands and tools.
B. Title Bar – where the title or filename is located
C. Control Buttons – the buttons on the upper right corner with minimize, maximize/restore,
and close buttons.

D. Ribbon – consists of
a. Tabs – such as Home, Insert, Design, Layout, etc.
b. Groups – the groupings of icons/tools according to their use like Clipboard, Font,
Paragraph, Styles, etc.
c. Dialog Box Launcher - this arrow down along groups that lets you access
other setting options for the group tools.
d. Icon Buttons/Tools – the icons/tools used for formatting the spreadsheet.
E. Cell Address/Reference – combination of column and row coordinates.
Example: A5 (Column A, Row 5)
F. Name Box – is located to the left of the Formula Bar. It displays the cell reference or
the name of the active cell.
G. Active Cell – is recognized by the green outline. The selected cell. Data is always entered
into the active cell.
H. Row Number – identifier of rows. Rows can be numbered 1 to 1, 048, 576.
I. Formula Bar - is located above the worksheet and displays the contents of the active cell.
It is also used to edit data and formula.
J. Column Letter – identifier of columns. Columns are named from A-Z, AA-AZ... and so on
and so forth.
Note: The number of columns and rows in worksheets are limited by the computer’s
memory and system requirements.
K. Worksheet - is a grid of cells consisting rows and columns.
L. Zoom Slider - changes the magnification of a worksheet when you drag the slider box
back and forth
M. Status Bar - runs horizontally along the bottom of the screen, can be customized to display
several options, most of which display information about the current worksheet, data the
worksheet contains - such as sum, average, min, and max, and the keyboard.
N. Sheet Tab - displays the name of the worksheet, such as Sheet1 or Sheet2.
O. Gridlines – non-printable lines that serves as a guide for the worksheets and cells.
P. Cell - are the rectangular boxes located in the central area of a worksheet. It is the
intersection of column and row.
