Internet ISW Firmware Upgrade Procedure-1

The document provides instructions for updating firmware on an Internet ISW system using a network connection. It outlines prerequisites like having an extraction tool to unpack firmware files and an FTP server on a local PC. The steps include extracting firmware TAR files from compressed GZ files, setting up an FTP folder with the TAR file, and configuring the engine's forwarding access settings to point to the TAR file on the FTP server. Once programmed, selecting download and ISW start initiates the firmware update process over the network.

Engine Firmware Updates

Overview:

[Internet ISW] is the system which gives the instruction for updating the firmware with the control
panel of the main body, so the main body will automatically receive the firmware from the program
server over a network for updating.

The following conditions are necessary for using the Internet ISW function.

• The main body is connected to such a network environment that the firmware can be
downloaded on the internet using the ftp or http protocol.

The “Internet ISW” will not operate under the following conditions.

• Main power switch is set to OFF.

• Sub power switch is set to OFF.

• When the following setting is set to “ON”: [Administrator Setting] → [Security Setting] →
[Enhanced Security Mode]

• The main body has the job currently performing.

• Reference the Field Service Manual – Firmware Upgrade procedures for the machine you wish
to upgrade.

Key Points:

• The Internet ISW function requires that you extract the firmware TAR file from the compressed
GZ file contained in the firmware card_work folder. This can be done using 7-Zip, WinZip, or
WinRAR utilities available for download from the Internet.
• TAR files contain multiple files stored as one archive. The file is created using the Unix tar
program. TAR files are not automatically compressed, so they are often compressed with the
Gnu Zip program, often called GZip which creates the .GZ file.
• For the FTP Server you can use the KMBT FTP utility, available from the KMBS Download
Selector under the Black and White Products => Utilities => ftp_server_1.0.exe.

Exercise Pre-Requisites:

• Student must have an extraction tool loaded on their workstation to extract the TAR file from
the compressed GZ file of the selected firmware upgrade file. For this exercise we will use 7-
Zip available from http://www.7-zip.org/.
• Follow your instructor’s directions on installing 7-Zip on your workstations. Accept all default
folder designations. Note: After installing 7-Zip go to the Tools Options Menu and put a
checkmark in the GZ, GZip and TAR checkboxes.
• Your Instructor will provide the latest engine firmware to be utilized for this classroom exercise.
• The KMBT FTP utility must be preloaded on your workstation prior to using this exercise.
Follow the Instructors instructions on the loading and configuration of the utility.

Documentation Reference:

• Field Service Manual Ver. 8.0 for the C550, Maintenance => Firmware Upgrade.

Task 1: Extracting the TAR File from Firmware File

Make sure you place the firmware file in a

folder that is clearly labeled as to which
machine the file is to be used in. Do not
launch this file on your desktop.

In this example we are using the C550 R5

firmware file located in a C550 R5 Firmware
file folder.

Open the folder containing firmware file that

was provided by your instructor.

Double-click on the Setup Icon to begin the

process of decompressing the firmware file.

By default the firmware will extract into the

folder containing the firmware file. If you
wanted to extract the file to another location
you click on the Reference button and point
to another extraction location for the file.

In this exercise we will keep the default

folder.

Click on OK.

Here the card_work folder has been created

in the same folder that the original
compressed firmware file was located.

Once you have extracted the card_work

folder you can delete the original
compressed firmware file to conserve disk
space on your computer.

Open the card_work folder and locate the

Mosel2_cf.tar.gz file.

The next step requires the use of the 7-Zip

utility that you’ve previously loaded.

Point to the GZ file and while holding down

your right mouse key, drag and drop the file
to the FTP folder that you created when you
loaded the KMBT FTP Utility.

Note: The folder has a G on it indicating

that it is a GZip file format. You must extract
the Tar file as shown in the next procedure.

When you place your cursor over the FTP

folder release the right key, point to the 7-
Zip menu selection and highlight the Extract
Here menu selection. This will extract the
TAR file to your FTP folder.

Here the Mosel2_cf.tar file has been

extracted into the FTP folder. You are now
ready to setup the engine to point to this
folder in order to pull the firmware over the
network to the machine.

Note: The folder has a T on it indicating that

it is a Tar File.

Task 2: Programming Engine Settings

On your machine enter the Service

Programming mode.

If this is the first time you’ve used the

Internet ISW you must first Set Internet ISW
to ON.

Touch the Internet ISW Set key and when it

opens select ON then select End.

Touch the Forwarding Access Setting Key

and program the selections to point the TAR
file located on your computer.

In this exercise we are using Anonymous as

the User ID. This is because we left the
KMBT FTP utility set on the default
Anonymous setting.

In the User ID simply type in Anonymous.

Anonymous does not require a password

so you may skip that selection.

Type in the URL to your PC running the FTP

Utility, making sure to include the ftp folder
in the path.

Finally type in the name of the TAR file that

you’ve placed into your FTP folder on your
PC.

Here we are using the Mosel2_cf.tar file

previously extracted to your FTP folder.

When you have completed the Filename

touch End to return to the Main Menu.

Every model of engine has its own unique

naming convention for the TAR file.

See the chart on the left for other Indexed

Firmware file names.

Select Download to begin the download

process.

Select ISW Start.

The machine will reboot.

The machine will now connect to your PC

where the FTP folder containing your
firmware file is located.

Once a connection is made the machine will

begin the negotiation to access your FTP
utility and download the firmware file to the
machine.

Firmware is now being downloaded from

your PC to the engine.

As soon as the firmware file is downloaded

to the engine this window will appear. By
default all elements will be updated. The
firmware update will start in approximately
30 seconds if you do not press the Start key.

Once the download starts the screen will

show the download process, displaying
Check Sum values as each element
completes. Note the Print Switch will blink
Orange during the writing process.

Check your readme file associated with the

firmware file to verify correct Checksums are
displayed.

After the firmware file has completed the

download process the Print Switch will turn
blue and the machine will reboot shortly
afterward.

This screen is displayed after the successful

download process.

Touch OK to return to the normal machine

control panel screen.

You are now ready to use the new features

enabled by the new firmware.

This exercise is now complete.

NOTE: If you have a Firewall turned on in

your computer you may not be able to
connect to your computer. You should
temporarily turn it off while you do the
upgrade procedure. Be sure to turn it
back on when you are finished upgrading
the firmware.
