TOPIC 4

MEMORY, LEARNING AND IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

WHAT IS MEMORY?

Memory is the process of taking in information from the world around us, processing it, storing it and
later recalling that information, sometimes many years later. Memory can make learning difficult, but
the good news is that us can work to improve our memory. There are three ways of memory like
sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
1. SENSORY MEMORY
Sensory memory is the earliest stage of memory. During this stage, sensory information from
the environment is stored for a very brief period of time, generally for no longer than a half-
second for visual information and three or four seconds for auditory information. Because of
that, we need always pay attention on what we are doing that time or we will easily forget.

2. SHORT TERM-MEMORY
It is very limited storage. From the sensory memory, information will be released to Short
Term Memory. You only will be remember for short time. Information will be lost if you do
not make a review. Therefore, we as a student must realize that applying memory strategies is
important to strengthen the memory ability.

3. LONG TERM-MEMORY
This unlimited and large storage. It just like a big library with a lot of books, the books are
analogy to information we encode and save. For example, we can remember information
about ourselves like name, date of born, name of family and also there are some memory we
cannot forget even though that has happened over the years in our lives. From STM,
information move to LTM and stored here for later use(retrieval)

17
THE CONCENTRATIONS:
• Lack of motivation
• Lack of attention
• Uncomfortable learning environment
• Quickly tired and snoozing
• Distractions from others
• Lack of interest

STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE CONCENTRATION

• Find one person who was success to be your idol for motivation
• Focus when you do something
• Make your learning to be fun
• Get enough sleep and rest
• Set study time and time to do another things
• Create your own comfortable and beautiful learning environment
• Take a break when you study very long

18
ACTIVITY 4-1

Where Are You Now?

Take a few minutes to answer yes or no to the following questions.

YES NO
1. Do you often know the answer to a question but find that you can't think of it? Yes No
2. Do you organize or group information to help you remember it? Yes No
3. After you study, do you go back and test yourself to monitor your learning? Yes No
4. Do you make up rhymes or words to help you remember some information? yes No
5. Do you space your practice when reviewing information? Yes No
6. Do you try to memorize all the information that you need to know for an exam? Yes no
7. Do you often find that you get confused by closely related information? Yes No
8. Do you often forget a lot of the information that you studied by the time you take the test? Yes No
9. Do you ever remember exam answers after the exam is over? Yes No
10. Do you try to remember information just by making up a rhyme, word, or other memory aid? Yes No

TOTAL POINTS: 5

Give yourself 1 point for each yes answer to questions 2, 3, 4, and 5, and 1 point for each no answer to questions 1,
6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Now total up your points. A low score indicates that you need to improve your memory strategies.
A high score indicates that you are already using many good memory strategies.

TAKING LECTURE NOTES

WHY TAKE LECTURE NOTES

Note taking forces you to pay attention and helps you focus in class. It helps you learn. Studies on
learning have shown that actively engaging with the topic by listening and then summarizing what
you hear helps you understand and remember the information later.

HOW TO TAKE LECTURE NOTES?

▪ You can't write down every word.
▪ Pay Attention.
▪ Underline, Highlight and Capitalise.
▪ Use Shorthand (Abbreviations)
▪ Put distractions away.
▪ Be Comfortable.
▪ Ask questions when confused.
▪ Share and compare notes with classmates.

STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING YOUR LISTENING SKILLS

▪ Consider eye contact.
▪ Be alert, but not intense.
▪ Pay attention to nonverbal signs, such as body language and tone.
▪ Make a mental image of what the speaker is saying.
▪ Empathise with the speaker.

Organize Information
After you read and mark the text selection “Political Theories and the Media” in Figure 4.6, organize the information
that you need to learn. Group outline, or map the information to make meaningful. Then devise a strategy for
remembering the main points that you included. Compare your organizational structure and mnemonics you create
with those of your group.
