Actsafe’s Toolbox Talks are intended as an informational resource for employers and supervisors to use
to deliver a safety talk on a specific subject. A toolbox talk can be an effective way of refreshing
workers' knowledge of safe work procedures and sharing information with more experienced workers.

Footwear can provide workers comfort and protection from some hazards such as falling
objects, heat, cold, wet and slippery surfaces, or even exposure to corrosive chemicals. In

addition to protecting our feet, safety footwear may reduce the likelihood of tripping,

slipping, and falling and reduce fatigue from standing for long periods of time.

The following are some suggestions for appropriate safety footwear:


● Consider the work hazards that exist in your workplace when selecting appropriate
footwear.
● Consider the weather when working outdoors such as waterproof shoes, boots or
snowshoes.

● Consider slip resistant soles when working around water or other slippery surfaces.
● Safety is a priority and should not be comprised when considering the footwear.
● Safety footwear should fit appropriately at the time purchase.
● Consider shock absorbing soles for standing or walking on hard floors for long periods of
time.
● Footwear must grip the heel firmly and provide freedom of movement for the toes.

● Footwear must have a fastening across the
instep to prevent the foot from slipping when
walking.
● Footwear must have a low, wide-based heel;
flat shoes are recommended.
● When working behind the camera do not
wear high heels or open shoes.
