You are to investigate on the impact of farming activities on rural livelihoods in or around
your community. Conduct your research following the steps outlined below.

Step1: Hypothesis; Use the following hypothesis

Farming activities have a significant positive impact on livelihoods in or around


my community.

Guidelines.
The hypothesis brings out that farming is an important component of rural livelihoods as
farming provides essential sources of income, employment opportunities in farms and
other farm related factories and access to food resources.
You are to investigate the types of farming in study area, types of crops and livestock
raised in and the economic benefits provided to local population.
You to investigate the types of jobs people are doing in the farming sector in your area
and their earnings. Also examine the challenges faced by farmers and how to reduce
them.

Step 2: Background Information


 Indicate the name and geographic location of the settlement under study
 define the following terms
-farming activities
-livelihoods
 discuss the types of farming in your area and the impact of farming activities on
rural livelihoods in or around your community
 Mapping – provide a map for your study area, scale of the map, map title should
be clearly visible on the map. If a map of South Africa is used ,highlight the area
of your study.

Step 3: Methods of data collection


Collect data using at least THREE methods: Make sure you use both primary and
secondary sources of data . Explain how each data source will be used and state
reason for choosing each source.
 Literature research (newspapers, magazines, books, etc)

 Questionnaires/Interviews
 Field observations
 Photographs and maps

Step 4: Analysis and Synthesis of data


 Analyse the data that you have collected, formulate a report on your findings.
Support your findings with photos and maps where applicable.
 Discuss the impact of farming activities on rural livelihoods in the study area.
 Discus the contribution of farming activities in job creation and generating income.
